Neither one is pleasant. You use the word punishment when maybe this is discipline. God disciplines, corrects those who have given their lives to Him in love. It may not appear to be love at the time. Rest assured this is always for our good. Additionally God uses hardship to call the unsaved to him or to bring their attention to Him. Sometimes these hardships cause the unsaved to seek God. Other times the hardship makes them even more determined to resist God. Believers are never punished, they are corrected.
