I'm just curious if anyone here practices head coverings Per:

1 Corinthians 11:2-16 (New International Version):

2I praise you for remembering me in everything and for holding to the teachings, just as I passed them on to you.

3Now I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of every woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.

4Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head.

5And every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head

I believe that the wearing of hats for women was the custom of the day, but not observed by most today. I think it is more important for a woman to be humble in spirit. Let's face it women can use hats as a symbol of pride. My hat is prettier than yours, attitude. My daughter's mother in law considers herself a better Christian then me because she doesn't cut her hair or wear pants. But she over looks the fact that she has not been inside her Church's doors in 4 years. It is one thing to give up stuff as a dedication to God it is quite another to use it as a tool to feel superior to others.

My wife wears a head covering in the Lord's Day meetings. Her decision to do this was completely a matter between her and the Lord.

Brother,

I never meant to imply that it is wrong to wear a covering, I just do not think it is required. I am also just saying that anything we do for God, if we do become fulled with pride over this, it can become a sin.

Oh, believe me, sis, I didn't take it that way at all. :) I only meant to say that my wife's decision to wear a head covering (It's a little doily thing, by the way, not a hat) was a matter of her consecration to the Lord, and not because of the verses. :o

I understand. I know some that say it's a humbling experience and complete submission to the Lord.

I definately seen that. But I always feel bad for anyone who sits behind the women wearing the monster hat because their view to the alter must be blocked. It's nice to have beautiful hats, but atleast remove them like the old men used to do many decades ago with their hats. The covering was never meant to be a display. IMHO

I don't mind wearing a hat.

If the Church I go to requires women to wear hats, I'll happily put one on.

If the Church doesn't enforce that rule, then I'll happily go without a hat.

Either way......I think the hair is like a covering.

Anyone agree? :)

I have too much hair.......a hat won't sit right! :)

Seriously though, I see some women with and some without some sort of head covering in my Church. I just have my hair. :)

I believe there was a cultural significance to women covering their hair that isn't around in our society now - for me to follow this rule to the letter would be like following legalism.

I am more concerned with women dressing modestly, which I believe would be more in line with the spirit of this rule.

***

Something to think about: Paul wrote that men should not pray nor prophecy with their heads covered - yet Hebrew men wore prayer shawls over their heads when praying.

So, could it be that what Paul meant was not what we think he meant?
