For as high as the heavens are above the earth,

so great is his (God’s) love for those who fear him.”

Psalm 103:11

“The fear of the Lord” is a key theme

in the wisdom literature of the Bible.

(The book of Job through Song of Songs)

It means to have respect and reverence for God

and to be in awe of his majesty and power.

This is the starting point to finding real wisdom.

Let there be no misunderstandings as Peter warns us Christians  " Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king."(K.J.V. 1 Pet.2:17)The Greek meanings here are clearly

Honour τιμάω
timaō
Thayer Definition:
1) to estimate, fix the value
1a) for the value of something belonging to one’s self
2) to honour, to have in honour, to revere, venerate.

Fear φοβέω
phobeō
Thayer Definition:
1) to put to flight by terrifying (to scare away)
1a) to put to flight, to flee
1b) to fear, be afraid
1b1) to be struck with fear, to be seized with alarm
1b1a) of those startled by strange sights or occurrences
1b1b) of those struck with amazement
1b2) to fear, be afraid of one
1b3) to fear (i.e. hesitate) to do something (for fear of harm)
1c) to reverence, venerate, to treat with deference or reverential obedience

The same Greek word "phobeō"  is used by Christ in "But I will warn you whom to fear: fear the One who, after He has killed, has authority to cast into hell; yes, I tell you, fear Him!"(N.A.S.B. Lk.12:5).The best is not to have God as your enemy, even if you don't believe that God exists or if you do ;but believe that Christ is the "The Nice God" and the God of the OT is all about "wrath and brimstone", and no longer applicable; think again with that same phobia you would have looking of a high cliff or diving into stormy waters.
