Until Jesus died on the cross, the Old Testament / Old Covenant was in place. The New Covenant / New Testament only began at that very moment Jesus gave up the ghost. The place he scriptures are rightly divided (2 Timothy 2:15) specifically between the Old and New Testaments is NOT at the traditional Malachi 4 / Matthew 1 but when Jesus died on the cross: Matthew 27:50 Mark 15:37 Luke 23:46 John 19:30 The Sermon on the Mount which traditionally has been interpreted to be Christian marching orders (for our way of life) was in face under the Law and about the Law itself spoken to Jewish people. Example: the forgiveness of the Father is not contingent upon our forgiveness of others under the New Covenant (John 3:16-18 / Ephesians 2:8-10 / John 16:27). Understand the Law stands forever. Grace supersedes Law only for those who have faith in Jesus. And the Law itself contains prophetic elements about Grace, but without that faith in the Jewish Messiah man is held to the strictest standards of the Law (and actually condemned by them). You are correct, the 4 gospels are about the life of Christ, and Christ lived under the law dispensation.
