You did this by flailing it with a stick, and later by driving a wooden sled with teeth-like protrusions on the underside over the harvested grain and attached stalks. Tribulus appears as happening to both Israel/Judah and their enemies. Zechariah 12 is where you can see the current state of affairs, Israel has been attacked countless times to no avail as God has until now protected them, yet at some time his protection will cease and as can be seen in Zechariah 14, they will take Jerusalem only to be destroyed by God in the last day.
