At a joint press conference held at Mr. Trump’s Mar-A-Lago estate, both speakers emphasized the need for measures to guarantee the integrity of national elections and to prevent illegal immigrants from casting votes that could potentially alter election outcomes. “What we’re going to do is introduce legislation to require that every single person who registers to vote in a federal election must prove that they are an American citizen first,” the speaker said. Johnson added, “You will see Republicans stand for election integrity. Democrats are going to have to go on the record.” While noncitizens are permitted to vote in some local elections, they are prohibited from participating in all state and federal elections. Nevertheless, the federal voter registration form in the United States does not mandate documentary proof of citizenship, and attempts by states to enforce such a requirement have faced opposition from the Biden administration. The speaker explained that the proposed legislation would implement new measures to guarantee that only citizens can vote. It would compel states to purge noncitizens from their voter rolls and grant them access to Department of Homeland Security and Social Security Administration databases to facilitate this process. “Congress has this responsibility. We cannot wait for widespread fraud to occur … especially when the threat of fraud is growing with every single illegal immigrant that crosses that border,” Johnson said. In a statement issued by the Biden campaign, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) criticized the announcement as a “sham.” He accused Mr. Trump of being unable to “admit the truth: that he lost the 2020 election.” “Donald Trump and Mike Johnson aren’t interested in election integrity,” stated Thompson. “Their only concern is aiding Trump’s campaign of revenge and retribution to reclaim power by any means necessary.” On Friday, Speaker Johnson played a pivotal role, casting the tie-breaking vote in a crucial decision that would have necessitated a warrant for any surveillance authorized by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) on American citizens. Despite Mr. Trump’s public appeal to lawmakers to “kill” the law, Johnson’s vote sided with the majority of his colleagues. His decision, however, did not sit well with one of Mr. Trump’s staunchest allies, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, who criticized Johnson for his handling of Ukraine war aid and government spending, threatening to oust him from his speaker position. The tension escalated as Ms. Greene voiced her discontent to reporters, questioning, “What is the difference between Speaker Johnson and Speaker Nancy Pelosi?” She also targeted Johnson in a fundraising email, accusing him of aligning with “The Company” that represents the political establishment or “Swamp,” thereby betraying Republicans and the American people. Despite these accusations, Mr. Trump defended Johnson, acknowledging the complexity of his position and expressing his good relations with both the speaker and Ms. Greene. “I think he is doing a very good job,” Trump stated, highlighting his ongoing support for Johnson despite the internal party conflict.
