Fruit of repentance

This article discusses fruits that accompany genuine repentance.

Genuine repentance always results in visible evidence of a change of mind.

John 14:15 and 1 John 5:3 instruct believers to “do” God’s commandments, affirming that his commandments are not grievous. And Psalms 138:2 declares that God’s word is more important than his name.

Matthew 3:8 and Acts 26:20 command believers to bear fruit, that is to do works, that prove repentance.

In Jeremiah 8:6-7Revelation 9:20-21 and Ezekiel 33:14-15 God declares that men are to repent from their wickedness and do that which is lawful and right, that is to restore the pledge, pay back that taken by robbery, obey God’s commandments, not doing injustice.

God’s law, in Leviticus 6:2-5 and Numbers 5:6-7, prescribes that you confess your sin and recompense your trespass, that is restore in the principal and add 20% thereof, and give it unto him against whom you have trespassed.

And Proverbs 6:30-31 prescribes that the thief who no longer has the principal shall make restitution, that is to restore sevenfold.

The importance God places on doing that which is lawful and right is clearly seen in Exodus 22:3 and Proverbs 6:31, which declare the guilty shall make full restitution to the point of selling everything in his house or working full time to pay for his theft.

And in Matthew 5:23-24, Jesus emphasises the need to make things right with others before offering worship to God.
