Richard Baatjies, a South African attempting to migrate to New Zealand, says he's having a few difficulties because he is officially dead.

Mr Baatjies and his wife Theresa returned home in October from a holiday in New Zealand and decided to emigrate.

But when Mr Baatjies 57, of Johannesburg, tried to renew his passport at the Department of Home Affairs, officials told him he had died of tuberculosis in 2005 in Port Elizabeth, the Sowetan newspaper reported.

Home Affairs officials have told Baatjies he has to initiate a whole new series of identity documentation, complete with fingerprints. By the beginning of December the application had been filled out, but computer data still "confirmed" that Mr Baatjies was "dead".

Now officials in Pretoria have told the couple they are working on the problem, but Mr Baatjies said he was worried because he is due in NZ to start a new job in February.

well if you did you would have to be careful about the pall bearers as most cheques are written " pay the bearer upon demand " :emot-handshake::whistling:
