However, the impact mountaintop removal has on the communities surrounding those mountains can be as devastating as the removal itself. As the production of coal using the mountaintop-removal method increases, the number of jobs sharply decreases correspondingly. And it's not just jobs that these Kentuckians are losing. Appalachian communities are losing money, too. As strip-mining companies come into their neighborhoods, the price of their property plummets because of the intense pollution caused by the mountaintop blasts. Rocks often fall from the blasts into town and also contaminate water supplies. Runoff from the strip mining has also been known to infiltrate clean water supplies. Toxins from the mining ruin the soil and leave agricultural communities surrounding mining sites barren. Roads are destroyed by the weight of the mining equipment, and calming mountain sounds are blasted away by the mining machinery. When Kentuckians are fed up with the terrible living conditions forced by these mines, they can't leave town because of the highly depreciated value of their property. It is hard to understand how companies can ravage a town, make their millions off of it and leave, while the depreciated communities are only left with fewer jobs than they had before, a devastated economy, a risk of dangerous drinking water, and a once-beautiful landscape left barren. Yup, they don't have to deal with the consequences of what they've done. All they do is sit back and count their money.
