The narrator was speaking about how gay men had faced many challenges and feel on the verge of acceptance, as though the worst was behind them. It was at this point I immediately changed channels in disgust. The very idea that they would advertise proves they are after more than equal rights. They actually want to desensitize the nation to homosexuality but in order to do this they have to force it in the publics collective face.
