Thats enough!

The story is legit. The phrase was mistaken, but the story is true. I'm cleaning this thread up, and it better not happen again.

I'll look for a link to the story.

Re-do!

Obama can ask anyone to help him, including his dead granny or even Allah/Satan if he chooses. It's his choice. This is a free country. That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if the atheists win in the long run.

i agree that it is a non-issue since it's not part of the oath anyway.

but i get really bent out of shape at what the left is saying about rick warren saying the prayer.

Rufus, thanks for looking that up. I wonder what was said to cause this thread to be "cleaned up?" :emot-hug: Someone must have gone off. :emot-questioned:

There are two seperate issues:

"So help me God"

And...the prayer that is said at the inaguration.

I don't mind gentle rebukes or corrections. What won't be tolerated is the "in your face" tactics that resemble bullying.

Back to the Oath of Office:

http://www.gamepuppet.com/presidents/oath.htm

Quote from this site:

I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of the President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

George Washington added the words, "So help me God," when he took the Oath, and every President since has followed that custom.

I think therein lies the confusion, as a Country people tend to get used to hearing "So help me God" when past presidents have taken the oath. I know I have, it might not be the in the "official" or "original" written oath...but its always been said.

Rufus, thanks for looking that up. I wonder what was said to cause this thread to be "cleaned up?" :24: Someone must have gone off.

As it happens, that was me.

Doesn't matter...water under the bridge...

I think this could be interesting though, interesting without panic.

It's a suit against "tradition" mostly. I'm curious how the court will handle it.

Yepp, the hate speech angle crossed my mind too.

Although this guy Newdow (sp?) seems to be mortally offended at every turn does he not? Sooner or later maybe he'll claim traumatic mental distress... :th_praying:

Has anyone else noticed the definition of "imminent harm" seems to be expanding? Its just not physical anymore, its grown to include mental distress..... :noidea:

More than likely, it will be tossed as having no merit. The opposition would have to show reckless endangerment or imminent harm. Since taking the oath doesn't involve either and the suit is civil rather than criminal there is no merit. Wouldn't surprise me, though, to see the opposition try and have it prosecuted as hate speech. Oy!

It's any President-Elect's choice as to how the ceremony is carried out (secular, Christian or some other faith). I don't believe any President has ever had other than a Christian swearing in ceremony though. Correct me if I'm wrong......
