Which Bible Version can you recommend (KJV, NIV, NKJV, etc)
Scylth replied to opportunitykenny's topic in General Discussion
I believe that the NASB is the best english translation. I wonder, are there people asking which are the best japanese translations, or spanish translations, or braille translations? Do we think the word of God is hindered by the quality of the translation? I don’t think so. The Holy Spirt can move through the “Good News Bible” as well as he can through a 450 a.d. greek transcript. -
David’s love for Israel was his love for God’s people. The USA is not God’s people, and that should be obvious to anyone. And God’s people have no interest in turning some government on some continent into God’s country. Jesus said plainly that would not happen. I guess Mormons believe that though, and I don’t want to offend, but I don’t believe that is supported by scripture.

American Patriotism and belief in our Lord are opposed to each other, I believe. Jesus never advocated for a country on earth for us, or a nation for us. "But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; for He has prepared a city for them." Peace everyone, I am a sinner and hanging on, hoping for mercy. I love you.

If you think that God wanted to have 620,000 thousand american soldiers die in the civil war, then I don’t know what to tell you. If you think Lincoln, who ordered his generals to be more aggressive and kill more, was a christian, I don’t know what to say. Have you read the Bible? God does not care about the world or state governments wherever they are. God does not prefer America, and has not blessed it, or any other nonsense. God cares about me and you, and loves us.

I never said patriotism started with Hitler. That was someone else, and yes, ridiculous. Patriotism was indeed around long before that. But patriotism, love for a country, is completely opposed to the will of God. Jesus expressly preached that what governments do have nothing to do with us. Our country is in heaven.

If this country was founded on christian principles, they wouldn’t have disobeyed the king of England. They wouldn’t have chosen to kill people to achieve their political and economic desires. Jesus’ kingdom is in heaven, not in the USA, not anywhere here on earth.

Hello - My Bible study seems to be being destroyed because after studying 1 John, one of our members has concluded that those that are born of God, see 1 John 3:9, and other verses in chapter 3, cannot and do not sin, ever. He says that if anyone sins, it shows that they were either never "born of God" or were "born of God" and have now fallen away. I believe that everyone who is a Christian, who have the "Spirit of Christ," are also "born of God," and that those that are "born of God" can in fact commit sin. This disagreement has obviously caused a great divide in our little group with him now refusing to meet with us becuase we don't see this "obvious" truth presented in 1 John. If anyone has any scripture or thougths to help me I would apprecitate it. I have pointer out 1 John 1:8 - 2:1, but he claims that John is using the "rhetorical" "we," and that those verses are referring to people prior to being "born" of God. I have pointed out Peter, and Paul saying that Peter "was to be blamed" as evidence of someone who was "born of God" who sinned, but he claims that it must not have been a sin. I don't know how to solve this problem and convince him that he is deceving himself. Any help?

It appears that there is nothing that will constrain you if you are going to do that. It appears that there is no constraint for those who hold that the letter, Hebrews, scripture written to saints, believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, instructions written to saints, is not to be used for doctinre, as Romans, or other letters are. They are not constrained by scripture, because their Doctrine has become more important to them than even that.

Well, this is what scripture says: 1 Timothy 5 For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave Himself as a ransom for all, the testimony given at the proper time. And the Catholic Catechism: 969 "This motherhood of Mary in the order of grace continues uninterruptedly from the consent which she loyally gave at the Annunciation and which she sustained without wavering beneath the cross, until the eternal fulfillment of all the elect. Taken up to heaven she did not lay aside this saving office but by her manifold intercession continues to bring us the gifts of eternal salvation .... Therefore the Blessed Virgin is invoked in the Church under the titles of Advocate, Helper, Benefactress, and Mediatrix."510 In anyone's understanding Mediatrix means Mediator of the female persuasion. And not only that, but here we see the claim that Mary "did not lay aside this saving office but by her manifold intercession continues to bring us the gifts of eternal salvation." Mary brings "the gifts of eternal salvation" from her "saving office?" There is only one Savior and that is Jesus Christ. This is just more teaching about Mary that is in contradiction to the fundamental teachings of scripture.

If you mean saying that scripture doesn't mean what it says is sufficient then I would at least say that you accomplished that. But saying that scripture doesn't mean what it says is not something that I find very convincing. In Matthew 13:55-56 we are told that Jesus had 4 brothers and some sisters at least. You say that it doesn't really mean that. I frankly can only conclude that you say that to promote your agenda. Matthew 13:55 "Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not His mother called Mary, and His brothers, James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? 56 "And His sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this man get all these things?" Galatians 1:18 Then three years later I went up to Jerusalem to become acquainted with Cephas, and stayed with him fifteen days. 19 But I did not see any other of the apostles except James, the Lord's brother. These verses say that Paul saw James, the Lord's brother. Paul considered James, the Lord's brother, an Apostle, as he considered himself an Apostle. But you say that when Paul says James, the Lord's brother, he doesn't really mean, James, the Lord's brother. Again, I conclude that your selective reading is more agenda driven than anything else.

Oh yeah, I am sorry. I read that yesterday I think, but when I went to the thread tonight I just went to the end and got a bit fired up hehe. I wont post on this thread again. Thank you for pointing that out.

As part of the Catholic's twisted and deceitful teaching about the Immaculate Conception is the teaching that Jesus was the only child born of Mary. Scripture tells us that Jesus had brothers. This shows a direct contradiction between what the Catholic's teach on this subject and what the scriptures teach. The Catholics teach that Mary is a mediatrix between us and God. Someone in Heaven who intercedes for us, between us and God. This also is in direct contradiction to scripture which tells us that only Jesus Christ is our intercessor with the Father. The Catholic Catechism is replete with stated beliefs that are in direct contradiction to what scripture teaches. I am willing list all I can of them if required to combat the lies of the "idol worshipers" if they insist on promoting their false teachings here. The Catholic church just says flat out that they are not restrained by scripture, that their beliefs have been revealed to them by God, and they therefore cannot be questioned. They state flat out that their Tradition is the equal of Scripture as far as revealed truth from God. Simply put, they seem to have no shame whatsoever.

I think it is probably good that you are out of there soulwinner, I hope you find another church that is better at following the Way.
