Perhaps though, it would be meritious to look at the tithing system of the Israelites while under the theocratic reign. Those tithes were not voluntary, and they did take a portion of it to look after "social needs" for want of a better word.
Israel did not operate under a socialistic government. In ancient Israel, you enjoyed the fruit of your own labor on your own personally and privatelly owned property. The tithing system was not socialism, although it did provide for the widows, and the poor who had no one to care for them. Otherwise, you took care of your own.

Yes, and :noidea: .

I never claimed they had a socialistic government. You basically said what I said. There was a portion of mandatory tithes that went to helping genuine social needs (which you have called the widows and poor who had no one to care for them).

We agree, do we not :whistling: .

I saw a good quotation:

"I don't mind the redistribution of wealth. It's the redistribution of poverty that I have a problem with."

This is what tend to happen with Socialism.

You see, the way Socialism works is not "rob from the rich and give to the poor."

Socialism is rob from everyone and redistribute as seen fit.

A low income farmer is taken from as much as the wealthy business owner.

Is that favorable? :noidea:

Sister,

how many people in America are starving right now? and how many churches have an abundance to spend on beautiful buildings? where are the priorities?

I'm not kidding, in that previous post you accused the Church.

Regardless, I volunteer and lead a Homeless outreach in the Nations Capital. On any given Sunday there is more food and clothes out there than you probably have in your home. I have first hand knowledge of folks that volunteer and give there from my tiny little Church in MD to the largest Church in Northern, VA. :noidea:

Peace,

Dave

That depends. Are you citing that aspect of ancient Israeli culture as a defense of socialism??

then again, had the Church been doing it's job, the government would have had no need to step in and rob the "rich" to give to the "poor".

I'm not really sure this would be true.

The problems of poverty go much deeper than can be fixed by churches giving money out.

Travel through Appalachia sometime and calculate how much money it would take to pull these people out of poverty?

Visit some Native American reservations and do the same.

Then travel through the Inner cities. . . .

(beyond the quotation marks, let me expound to say that i do not believe it is the rich in this country who are giving to the poor. we have no robin hood here!)

I doubt that. Even if the church wiped out poverty the government would still find ways to justify stealing money from the people, rich or not. The government doesn't do anything from the goodness of its heart.

maybe i'm the odd one, but i truly don't think the Church is doing what it is suppose to be doing. you do?

Charitow, are you expressing this out of having researched how much money individual churches donate and have programs to help the poor?

Or what?

how can we help the poor and the downtrodden when we sit in $500,000 buildings to worship our Saviour who hung out with sinners and the poor?

Just curious, where would you fit a congregation of 1000 people? 2000? 3000?

Note, I'm not a mega-church fan. However they do have their benefits.

In any event, do you suppose the majority of Christians in the US attend church in such buildings?

And are these churches devoid of charity? Devoid of programs to help the poor and needy?

did Jesus dig deeper than money?

I'm not sure how Jesus could have ministered for free in today's society, either. Even open fields need money to hold a large gathering.

Unfortunately, the Scripture is silent on what Jesus did with His money beyond the mention of Judas and the moneybag.

Speaking of which - Mary gave up an expensive perfume to worship the Lord with. So don't you think the Church should be spending money worshiping the Lord as well? (Not to be a one or the other thing, but not to be despised either.)
