It was a sea of debris (vehicles, boats, homes, homes on fire, other unidentifiable stuff) moving across the fields.

That's a lot of crop loss. The poor farmers!

It's actually winter in Japan. They won't start planting rice until May/June.

What will be affected are the grain imports.

Well, hard to say if the fields will be planatable.

But I don't think those were rice fields I saw. Rice grows in water. That could have been some other grain or vegetable fields.

Rice paddies dry up in the off season.

But you're right, rice isn't the only crop in Japan.
