I saw the verse of 1 Timothy 4:2-3 and I looked up the greek translations of the words, 'forbid' and 'commanding to abstain'. 'Forbid' and 'commanding to abstain' are in the same verse: 1Timothy 4:3 This is what I found out: Forbid: Strong's Transliteration Greek English Morphology 2967 [e] kōlyontōn κωλυόντων forbidding forbid, hinder, prevent 568 [e] apechesthai ἀπέχεσθαι [commanding] to abstain be, have, receive. Receive in full; (intransitively) to keep (oneself) away, i.e. Be distant (literally or figuratively) -- be, have, receive. And so the words for 'forbid' and 'abstain' are different in Greek. And the word for 'food' is : From the base of bibrosko; food (literally or figuratively), especially (ceremonially ) I recall how King David said that he ate the food which was in the Temple, the ceremonial food and God didn't mind. Reception, 'to receive', is also in that verse: meaning 'sharing' From metalambano; participation -- taking. We do know that Jews, who keep the dietary Law, would not share any foods which God's dietary Law prohibits even to this day. I hope this can help. I found John Gills commentary to be a good one.....hope that helps http://www.biblestudytools.com/commentaries/gills-exposition-of-the-bible/1-timothy-4-3.html WE must truly understand the context of a single verse of Scripture, usually that is where a mis understanding comes from.....to know who is being addressed, the times, traditions, customs etc.... is very helpful and that is why we cannot take the SCriptures out of context With love-in Christ,Kwik
