To refuse to believe what God says (e.g. his teaching that he created the heaven and the Earth in six literal days) is to lack grace and humility

That is NOT what the Bible says. The literal 6 days are the day God finished His work. A work that took Him 13.8 Billion years. God declares the end from the beginning. Isaiah 40:10. God watches over His word to perform what He says He is going to do. Then there is a day when His work is finished. Jeremiah 1:12.

Genesis 2:2 "And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made"

Genesis 2:2 "By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work."

The seventh day is the day god FINISHED His work. There are very, very few words here: 32 verses. It would take hundreds of thousands of books to explain what God did in Genesis chapter one. Even all the books in the world would not be enough to explain what God did.

I repeat, if we read every science book that has ever been written, we would ONLY begin to understand what God is telling us in Genesis chapter one. In a very short 32 verses. Using very few words.

.this is going to require very long and arduous discussion

What would be long is a list of the things that Adam was the first of. Adam and Eve were the common ancestors for the people that gave us civilization.  Adam was the first farmer, the first food producer, the first animal husband, a term they still use today for people that breed animals.

Moses gives us a lot of the civil engineering needed to build a city. During the Middle Ages, what they call the dark ages, there was a lot of sickness and disease because people did not feel a need to follow the teaching of Moses.

Moses studied under the Egyptians, a people that were very advanced at the time. He was considered a son of the Pharaoh, so he got the best education possible in his day. Just like Abraham was also a well educated person under the Chaldean's in the city of Ur.

Here is what the word of God says.

Gen. 1:1-2:3 (KJV)

1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
6 ¶And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.
7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.
8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.
9 ¶And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.
10 And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.
11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.
12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
13 And the evening and the morning were the third day.
14 ¶And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:
15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.
16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.
17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,
18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.
19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.
20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.
21 And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
22 And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.
23 And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.
24 ¶And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.
25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
26 ¶And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
29 ¶And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.
31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

CHAPTER 2.

1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

---As everyone can see, God created the heavens and the Earth in six days, then rested on the seventh day, which he sanctified (set apart for holy purposes).  It was for this reason that the seventh day of the week was the legal Sabbath, in the Old Covenant.

---Days that have a morning, or an evening, or are numbered days, are ALWAYS literal days, in the Bible.  The days of the creation week have ALL THREE, making it beyond doubt that they were literal days, not millions of years!

Exodus 20:9-11

9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

---As everyone can see, these are LITERAL days.  The day on which the Lord rested from his creation work was the same day that was the OC sabbath day, because that's the day (with a morning and evening) on which God rested from his creation labours.

Hello. Just curious. I've heard some Christians claim that God took millions or billions of years to make creation. However Genesis clearly says six days. People attempt to symbolize this but there is no reason to symbolize this. Was God incapable of doing it in six days? Other than believing in man's wisdom ( science books ) which is often wrong and constantly has to be revised, is there ANY scriptural reason for believing that six days somehow doesn't mean did days? On a side note, I'm just curious. IF God wanted to create something in six days, how would he have said he did if six days doesn't really mean six days? If numbers aren't literal in scripture, then was Jesus actually in the tomb for 3 days? Sorry for the rant. I'm not trying to argue. Just trying to understand why people symbolize numbers that seem to be very literal. Thanks.

And your rationale behind this is ..?  Genesis is not a scientific treatise and doesn't require scientific knowledge to understand it.

God will give the understanding of Genesis (and the rest of the Bible) to those who ask Him.

@JohnR7

Good and real science self-corrects.  Science used to believe that life just popped out of thin air.  That lead could be turned into gold.  And in the last 20 years alone, there have been mistakes in science.

GOOD science self-corrects because it has the hand of man in it.

The BIBLE NEVER has to self-correct.  Why?  Because God didn't write any mistakes.

I love science.  It's important.  But I TRUST the Bible.  It is truth.

You seem to hold to the opposite.
