Honestly, who really cares Chords are the cart before the horse for sure but a well timed delay setting can make for a brilliant riff. Dave Gilmore is a better example than the edge. It can give a solo a wonderful spacy sound. Don't even attempt rockabilly without slap back echo.

Floyd didn't depend on delay though. They used it some times but if I recall, their biggest hits "Wish You Were Here" or "The Wall" did not use delay. The rockabilly slapback is such a short delay it is not quite as overwhelming as the U2 sound. I just found it to be redundant because it was so dominant. Pent.) at about 800 milliseconds. He hard panned it center to left to right. It ended up making a great stereo harmony mix. As for U2, I just cant get past Bono's whiney voice. Edge is all echo and no real playing. You still have to play something. I use a boss digital delay at about 400 milliseonds at 3 repeats to give some of my solos dreamy vibe. You cant overdo it. The good thing is nobody over here, even in his homeland, pays much attention to him, he has a reputation of a meglomaniac, so his "preaching" tends to fall on deaf ears.
