I experience acid reflux occasionally after I eat, but that's caused by muscular dystrophy which affects the operation of the esophagus (similar in effect to the hernia @Sower mentioned above). Indeed, I was given the opportunity to watch an x-ray "movie" of that dysfunction in action last year!

I was led to a fascinating room in the Radiology department at the VA here in town by a nurse. After a few minutes, two gentlemen entered through the door:

One came bearing a tray littered with various food items, which I found hilarious (he grinned at me);

The other fellow came pushing a specialized x-ray video device. Neat!

They were going to make x-ray movies of me eating and swallowing things on that tray. The specialist operating the video machine would track food as it entered my esophagus and traveled to the stomach. I could tell something was amiss because it was clear that some of that food stood still in the esophagus for a while. :39:

After the procedure was finished, the fellow who brought the food tray viewed some of those "movies" with me, pointing out the pathology in action. Fascinating!

Muscular dystrophy affects my mouth, the throat, and the esophagus, all of which are why I must be careful about what I eat, how much I swallow, and always drink liquids when I eat. Liquids will help move food down to where it needs to go: food for the stomach, and the stomach for food; God will destroy both.

No evil spirits involved. Just this flawed flesh and blood body. :)

I had acid reflux pretty bad about 20 years back my Doc sent to the Hospital. In Radiology the tech ask me to lay on a table/bed face up. He said Im going to give you a shot you will feel warm a few seconds the all will be normal. When I woke up thee were 15 people all the way around me and I was looking up the ceiling and seeing his face about 15 inches above my face and he said I thought I lost 3 or 4 times. Turns out I am allergic to Iodine Dye.

I was given varibar (barium) pudding mixed with the food on that tray. That served to make everything inside clearly visible. It was supposed to taste atrocious --- they expected me to toss it up --- but it wasn't that bad. I had worse in the Army chow hall. :24:

I guess they just thought most can take Iodine Dye or did not have a test for it. When I was 12 I went to Dentist for abscess tooth he said Ill give you a shot of penicillin to get rid of this; have ever had a shot of penicillin ? I said no you are the first Dotor I have ever been to. He said Ill test you first and in 20 seconds I had red dots all over my arm. He told me make sure no one ever gives you a penicillin shot they wont have time to give you a shot to counter act the penicillin, scred the heck out of me. I was in the Air Force and we had fairly good chow. Even at the hanger I worked in on the flight line in the crash crew. then one day they closed our kitchen on the flight line to remodel we were forced (not very hard ) to eat in the officers chow hall for about 9 or 10 months.

I have a cousin, an electrical engineer, who with other "smart college dudes" designed constructed and sold prototypes of proven tested heart defibrillators, pace makers, and medicine implant dispensers. All that to say, even though he is an electrical engineer, who knows all about how our bodies have/need electricity to operate our heart and nerves etc, he is well trained within the whole systems of bodily functions.

In one discussion we had, I was telling him how I often will swallow water or cold drink, and 'accidentally' end up with a tiny amount go into my trachea, (wind pipe/lungs), instead of the esophagus onto the stomach.  And then a period of trying to cough up that extremely irritating  tiny drop of fluid up and out so I could breathe again.

He told me that when we swallow, there are 5-6 different muscles/flaps that have to work in perfect coordination to move liquid/solids to the esophagus of the stomach and if any one is not constricting/expanding on time, the liquid/solids will find a way to enter the trachea tube near by and create havoc. Basically, he said take my time swallowing, and everything will come out all right!.....default_cool2.gif.1277861345aa1aa3ded887e14d6a9de0.gif

PS; It would be really cool for us to see that actually happening.  Did you get a copy from the video machine that tracked your food as it entered your esophagus? What were you eating?.......Could post it in the video section...face.jpg.552dd757f9f543f05c3e8a0356c126c9.jpg

I wish I could have taken copies. It was pretty cool seeing the insides of the body at work!

Oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy affects the tongue and a specific muscle that opens and closes the esophagus in the throat. I bolded the portion of the name which addresses how it impacts the mouth and throat; the tongue grows weaker over time, and eventually the muscle that opens and closes the esophagus during swallowing stops functioning. The esophagus won't open any more.

There are things that can be done to avoid living with a feeding tube. A procedure can be done to open the esophagus... it's good for a while before it has to be done again. That muscle can also be removed by a surgeon, which isn't always effective but hey, it's worth trying to avoid a feeding tube.

Other parts of the body can also be affected by this kind of MD. Muscles that are close to the torso are an example. That was happening to me. My legs were getting steadily weaker because MD was affecting muscles in my hips and thighs. I was poked, prodded, and examined by a Neurologist who said that I woukd eventually need a wheelchair. Ah, but the Lord did an astonishing thing about that!

Muscles around the eyes are the "oculo" part. The VA wheeled me in for corrective surgery last year because I was basically going blind. They did an amazing job. :)

I forgot to add that the esophagus itself is affected by this MD too, of course. Can't edit posts lately... :39:
