This info is based on one quarter of sales. BYD cars are less expensive but have less range than Tesla. The cars are ok for shorter routes but have less capable batteries depending on conditions. Elon Musk has said he doesn't expect to be always at the forefront and encourages other makers, even opening up the Tesla charging network to them. One quarter is just three months. The numbers are close in that quarter with Tesla making 1.8 million cars. Nothing to sneeze at. There's also the politics involved. The UK, Australia and others allow importing BYD cars. The US will not allow import of BYD due to the battery component sourcing. At least this is the official explanation. BYD doesn't "beat" Tesla in performance and range. You get what you pay for.BYD has a lot more bling inside while Tesla uses a less cluttered approach. BYD is a 100% Chinese product and I suspect they mined tech from Tesla to make them. BYD has invented sodium ion battery much cheaper faster charging, longer distance and fireproof compared to conventional lithium.

They don't last as many charge cycles as litium. To me it seems BYD is releasing a bunch of shorter range cars with batteries that won't last as long. And BYD didn't invent sodium ion batteries.
