i've uncovered the following about edom so far and see from the 2nd paragraph that in present-day geography it lies somewhere inside Jordan or a part of Jordan. i would mainly like to know if the prophesy in isaiah 34 concerning the destruction of edom is a part of history or something to happen in the future. if it is future, then to me, it sounds symbolic - similar to the symbolism of babylon. any answers or ideas would be appreciated.

Idumea, or Idumaea, was the name used by the ancient Greeks (Ancient Empires - Greece) and Romans (see Ancient Empires - Rome) for the land of Edom (the "Idum" in Idumea was pronounced as "Edom" is in English), which was located between the northern section of the Gulf of Aqaba and the southern shore of The Dead Sea. Measuring approximately 100 miles / 160 kilometers long and 50 miles / 80 kilometers wide, it's named after Esau, the son of Isaac and Rebekah, who was the very slightly older fraternal-twin brother of Jacob / Israel (Genesis 25:23-26).

Sela, more popularly known by the Greek name Petra, is within Edom (2 Kings 14:7). One of its rock-carved faces is seen in the photograph.

The capital was of Edom was Bozrah (Isaiah 63:1). The earlier inhabitants of the land were Horites, but they were driven out by the Edomites (Deuteronomy 2:12). Edomite tribes settled also in the south of Judah, like the Kenizzites (Genesis 36:11), to whom Caleb and Othniel descended (Joshua 15:17).

Although the Edomites were closely related in blood and in language to the Israelites, they were at times in a state of war with the neighboring Kings of Israel and Judah (2 Kings 8:20, 2 Chronicles 28:17).

The Edomites refused a request by Moses for the Israelites to simply pass directly through Edomite territory on their way north (Numbers 20:14-21) (see Wilderness Journey).

The territory was conquered by King David (2 Samuel 8:14, 1 Kings 9:26), and in later years by Amaziah (2 Chronicles 25:11-12), but they regained their independence and again made war against Judah. The Edomites sided with the Babylonians under King Nebuchadnezzar when they conquered Judah and devastated Jerusalem (see Why Babylon?), but later the Edomites were themselves conquered by the Babylonians (Jeremiah 27:3-6).

There are many prophecies concerning Edom: Isaiah 34:5-6; Jeremiah 49:7-18, Ezekiel 25:13 and 35:1-15, Joel 3:19, Amos 1:11, Obadiah 1:1-21, Malachi 1:3-4.

Isaiah 34 is symbolic and I am sure was fulfilled at one time, but the word remains as such. We will leave Edom, for we know whome God hath cursed. Babylon is the greatest kingdom standing on the earth, it's king is a king of kings, and all prophecys concerning Babylon are waiting to be fulfilled. My people come out of Babylon, if you understand it, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, she is turned upside down, and all the images of her gods are smitten down to the ground (Isaiah 21). Understanding the scriptures is easier with the uncorrupt 1537 Matthew's with modern text, you really get the meaning of what the Lord actually said. Here's an example

Isaiah 25 :8

As for death he shall utterly consume it. The Lord GOD|LORDE God| shall wipe away the tears from all faces, and take away the confusion of his people thorow the whole world. For the LORD himself hath said it.

25:9

At the same time shall it be said: Lo, this is our God in whom we put our trust, and he hath healed us. This is the LORD that we have waited for: Let us rejoice and delight in his health.

25:10

For the hand of the LORD ceaseth upon this hill. But Moab shall be threshed down under him, like as the straw is trodden under feet in a dung hill.

25:11

For he shall stretch out his hands upon him, like as a swimmer doth to swim. And with the power of his hands shall he cast down his high pomp.

25:12

As for his strongholds and high walls: he shall bow them, cast them down, and sell them to the ground in to dust.

Edom is Russia. It began in Genesis:

Genesis 25:20 And Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah to wife, the daughter of Bethuel the syrian of Padan-aram, the sister to Laban the Syrian.

21.And Isaac intreated the Lord for his wife, because she was barren: and the Lord was intreated of him, and Rebekah his wife conceied.

22.And the children struggled together within her; and she said, "If it be so, why am I thus?" And she went to enquire of the Lord.

23.And the Lord said unto her, "Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger."

24.And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.

25.And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau.

30.And Esau said to Jacob, "Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint:" therefore was his name called Edom.

Edom means red or ruddy - the red nation. Esau sold his birthright to Jacob and:

Romans 9:13 As it is written, "Jacob have I loved but Esau have I hated."

The two nations in Rebekah's womb was Russia and America / Esau and Jacob.

Isaiah 34:6 The sword of the Lord is filled with blood, it is made fat with fatness, and with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of the kidneys of rams: for the Lord hath a sacrifice in Bozrah, and a great slaughter in the land of Idumea.

Idumea is Esau/Red - communism, socialism. Bozrah is a fortress of Edom, which is Russia.

I hope that helps a little.......I have to get ready for work now.

...........Whirlwind
