So, does this mean citizens can charge the IRS late refund fees and outrageous interest????

More than 3 million people will have to wait until February to get their tax refunds because of Congress' late fix to the alternative minimum tax, the IRS said Thursday.Congress put a one-year freeze on growth of the alternative minimum tax last week, shielding many middle- and upper-middle income taxpayers from first exposure to the tax. But Congress' late action means the Internal Revenue Service won't be able to start processing five AMT-related forms until February, delaying potential refunds for those people until that month.

Between 3 million and 4 million people filed in January for their 2006 taxes using those forms, with many expecting a refund, the IRS said. The average refund was $2,324, the agency said.

"We regret the inconvenience the delay will mean for million of early tax filers, especially those expecting a refund," acting IRS Commissioner Linda Stiff said.

The rest of the pathetic story is here.

A prime example of why we need government to be smaller, not larger.

"To really screw something up requires a computer. To foul something up beyond all hope of salvation requires government involvement." -- Unknown.

Who gets refunds these days? lol I worked at a middle- to upper-middle class income taxpayer for years. My refunds were under $100. What's the secret?

You should never, ever get a refund! At the very least, you should pay just exactly what you owe, not a penny more. The money is better off in your savings account, not in the government's hands!

paying around 1000 dollars a month in income taxes a person should receive a return. Where is our money going ? Thats a third of total income for that person. The record deficit along with the outsourcing ,globalization and amnesty to illegal criminals is enough. This country can't take anymore. Notice there is no mention of what is happening overseas that was started by looking for one man who still has not been found.

You'll get no argument from me on that, Mr Old Timer. I've been a strong proponent of a national consumption tax with the elimination of a federal income tax for a long time.
