Unfortunately, if you know anything about silversmithing, it's a completely load of crud! My cousin works as a medieval recreationist (making swords/armour/weapons/jewellery - that kinda thing). There are two processes. the Blacksmiths process - which involves heating metal and then beating it into shape. Working with silver and other malleable metals, on the other hand, does not require heat and is the job of a "silversmith" - who moulds the softer metals with hammers and the such (see THIS SITE for further information on silversmithing. They do not refine it. It would be the Blacksmith's job of refining the silver (or some other smelting process), if indeed that is how it was done at all. Considering it's melting temperature other methods of purifying silver exist - further reading, see HERE. It sounds like a beautiful story. But something tells me it was a fictional story (call it a Parable, if you will) to explain a theological concept. A google search found many versions of this stories in many sites, which seems to add to the idea that it is a modern-day Parable - Sample google search. That's not to say that we can't get some good information that we can use in our daily lives, but considering most of the information is wrong, it should not be used in any way to help understand this passage in Malachi. God does shape us into His image, doesn't matter how He does it, but He wants us to reflect His image to a dying world.
