On a more serious note...

What do you folks think about using/abusing other cultures "religious" items during war/conflicts..?

Do you think it's sacriligious regardless of the religion?

Give me an example.

Please.

For example if a bomb fell on statues of Buddha..deliberately...that kind of thing...

It really depends on how "holy site" intensive the enemy is. The more "holy site" intensive your enemy is, the more valuable such targets become. If it will mean something to the enemy to destroy it, then by all means destroy it. Christianity is not holy site intensive, so it would not affect us if we lost such things, but you get a religion like Islam which is very much Holy site intensive, such measures would be extremely effective.

In war time, anything you can do to demoralize the enemy is part of what you do to win. You want to strike your enemy's most valuable targets. The idea in war is respond in a manner that makes your enemy despair of further conflict. You make the the price for war higher than you enemy wants to pay.

The ammunition being on board was NOT the reason it was fired...

Why was it sunk?

So I've heard - it was sunk because it was flying the British flag and was the enemy.

The Lusitania flew no flags during her last voyage.

Most ships flew the american flag in order to be safe from the Germans, I'm not sure if the lusitania was flying one.I love history too.I have an old postcard of the Lusitania before she was sunken

found this on line....In 2008, divers explored the wreck of the Lusitania, situated eight miles off the coast of Ireland. On board, the divers found approximately four million U.S.-made Remington .303 bullets. The discovery supports the German's long-held belief that the Lusitania was being used to transport war materials. The find also supports the theory that it was the explosion of munitions on board that caused the second explosion on the Lusitania.

That's the argument bllodbought.

The Captain of the Lusitania knew munitions were on board for the replenishment of the English army - although some crew members did not know this. Remebering this is war so allowances are made in these circimstances. Should the Captain have let this happen, considering their were civillians on board? Or was he oredered by someone higher? The British Admiralty?

The German uboat crew were aware it was a passenger ship with many women and children on board but they made the disicion to go ahead and torpedo the Lusitania. Apparently this violated an unspoken code of conduct with ocean going vessels.

The Lusitania only took 18 minutes to go down - there is conflict concerning how many torpedos were fired. The German crew said it was one - survivng witnesses said it was one and the British Admiralty insisted it was 2-3..therefore trying to cover up the fact the ship was carrying munitions.

There is talk that the British were trying to draw the US into the war by wanting an immediate response from this tragedy. The US entered WW1 two years after the sinking of the Lusitania.
