  1. So I ended up at another JW's house along with the girl that I work with - 2 against 1 They made a big point of there being lots of Bible verses that back up their view and that their view is the truth. We went through a bit in their little study book. I can see how they could be really convincing - they were so fervent and backed each other up. Not sure if their comments were prearranged. Things that stood out to me - Jesus wasn't The Messiah or Christ until He was baptised - He didn't know who He really was and what His purpose was. Jesus was shielded in the womb against Mary so He would develop perfectly. Jesus was God's first creation and Jesus created everything else - heavens, earth, etc. Colossians 1:16 Jesus lived in heaven with God for billions of years. Michah 5:2, John 3:13, 6:38, 17:4 Jesus is not God. Jesus is less than God. John 14:28 They also used a verse in Genesis to "prove" that Jesus created the world - Genesis 1:26. Interestingly I didn't feel like I should get out as fast as possible - I felt quite supported and almost like what they were saying didn't touch me if that makes sense.
  2. I work with a girl who is a Jehovah's Witness and she said that, out of all those claiming to be Christians, only the Jehovah's Witnesses have a true view of Jesus. I am not entirely sure WHAT they believe really but I thought that among Christians there was pretty much a consensus on who Jesus is. I am sure that she will restart the discussion at some point so ... Are Jehovah's Witnesses Christians? I know that she has said that it isn't a religion - she calls it the truth. Who do they think Jesus is? Is this different to what other Christian groups believe? Are there Bible verses to back up the views? I am slightly disadvantaged as I wasn't brought up as a Christian and don't know the Bible all that well whereas she does. No matter what the subject she has Bible verses learnt off by heart to back up her view (or the JW view) and I just end up confused and not putting my point across well!
  3. I work with a Jehovah's Witness and we were talking about this issue today. She wears leggings and trousers for work but always wears a skirt or dress for JW meetings or when they go knocking on doors or doing Bible studies. I didn't really understand why it was a rule to wear skirts at meetings because of not having women dress like men but that it was ok in other situations. I thought it would be one or the other. Her explanation was that wearing skirts for the meetings was a sign of respect but couldn't really explain. I personally am trying to wear skirts more often as I feel more feminine and it seems to make me behave in a more ladylike manner. Evenings and weekends I am generally wearing a skirt (even for gardening after watching Homestead Blessings!) but not for work so far but this (and growing my hair) are both things that I have been praying on lately.
  4. I love the description in Proverbs 31 - it is one of my favourite sections in the Bible. The woman described in Proverbs 31 is strong, capable, trustworthy, innovative, and many other things. Very aspirational to me! She doesn't just do her duty grudgingly - she is eager and vigorous. She doesn't sound like some mistreated and maligned woman to me - there is strength in submission.
  5. Good guys seem pretty rare - good girls do too! I struggle to find people that I have much in common with as I am pretty old fashioned. Plus there just don't seem to be many believer here. Not in my age group anyway. I would say to stay true to your values and pray and don't feel like you have to change to suit what other people are looking for.
  6. It is not really something that I have to worry about but, while I agree that men are responsible for their actions, women can either make things easier or more difficult for them with their clothing and actions.
  7. It would seem silly to work so hard on changing my inner self and to then not make the changes that reflect that progress on my outer self. I do have a really long denim skirt - it has about a mile of fabric in it! - and I love how feminine I feel in it. It makes me stand and walk in a more ladylike manner. Shame it wouldn't be acceptable to wear it at work!
  8. Dressing in skirts all the time (or any time at work) would draw attention to me and attention makes me feel uncomfortable. I think I put a lot of pressure on myself as I am the only Christian in my group of friends and my family and colleagues aren't believers either so I feel that they look at me as the token Christian. So I wonder what they think when they see me. If I do something like wear a short skirt (for example as all my skirts are below knee length) it feels like they would judge other Christians by what I do and I am not a very good example. Maybe I just worry too much.
  9. Are you familiar with Eph. 6? I have read it but not studied it. Honour your father and mother.
  10. I don't see anything that bothers me but I wondered if that was because I am still a pretty new Christian. I have been reading about them and the main issue seems to be the patriarchy thing and the strict gender roles. Not things that I have an issue with really!
  11. Never heard of them - but it does look interesting. I have ordered a few books, dvds and audio books from them but keep seeing comments about the company beliefs. I like what I bought but would be interested to know if there really are issues with their beliefs.
  12. It is fine - I just don't know anyone who has used the site.
  13. Most boards frown on linking to another board, but to answer your question, no, I have not heard of it nor been there. Welcome to the Worthy Boards, angel_uk, have a good time here. I didn't realise it would be considered another board - it is a company that sells books, DVDs, toys and homeschool stuff.
  14. Does anyone know much about them? http://www.visionforum.com/ I have ordered a few things from them before but keep hearing opinions that it is a bad company. No one over here seems to have heard of them though! I don't know if people have an issue with them because the books and DVDs are Christian or if there is something else that is wrong.
  15. The thing is that not all posts are going to be interesting to everyone. If you saw a post that you had no interest in or knowledge about would you post in it simply because it had no replies! I have had threads here that have had very few replies - sometimes it does feel a bit like *ouch* people are ignoring me and not replying because it is my post.
  16. http://www.goodmorninggirls.org/about/ There is a message board and some groups are email only!
  17. It is fun! I find it really hard to read and post every day but the last study was on the Proverbs 31 woman and was really interesting.
  18. I guess not! I am in the process of setting up a singles group on FB for the study. Just have to decide on the name!
  19. Does anyone do the GMG studies? http://www.goodmorninggirls.org/ I have done a couple and enjoyed chatting to other Christians plus it made me really read the verses. The Autumn session is on Colossians and then there is an advent study. I need to get focussed and start reading my Bible daily. I always aim to and then life seems to get in the way. "If you have never heard of Good Morning Girls before here’s a little explanation. “Good Morning Girls” is a title for a group of women who use email, Facebook, Twitter, Skype or text messaging to keep each other accountable for their quiet times. For 3+ years, I have been a part of a group of girls who email each other each daily after we have our quiet time. We say “Good Morning” and then share what we read in our quiet time. Some of us have our quiet time first thing in the morning, while others squeeze it in during children’s naps or at bedtime. The time of day doesn’t matter…..our focus is just being in God’s Word daily!"
  20. PMS is tough for some ladies! I don't get mad I just get really emotional. For a couple of days I will just cry at anything - sad film, watching the news, anything to do with children or animals and those charity adverts on television. Some get very angry and moody though - probably best to avoid them - but not so much that they feel avoided! I'm not sure it is controllable!?
  21. It sounds really interesting! My Bible is just in the standard order though .... not sure how hard that would be. Plus I am already sort of doing a book study of Beautiful in God's Eyes. Although I have been meaning to actually read the Bible right through! A question - is it going to be an open or a closed Facebook group?
  22. I am doing my first giveaway on my blog and wanted to know if I could post a thread about it on this forum? I can't find any rules but it isn't making me money or anything it is just that it is my birthday this week and it seemed like the ideal time to do it! I am giving away a copy of Sew Pretty Homestyle by Tilda and Stitch! by Cath Kidston.
