Recently in a morning bible study the teacher stated that all pride is sin. I challenged him on it and asked if he was proud of his children and he said no. By the way his children and grandchildren are ALL involved in the Lord's work. My question is this. Is all pride a sin? You might want to look up the definition of pride and proud.

I think that all pride is a sin yes, but I think that we sometimes use the word proud as "expressing joy in something" in english.

When proud/pride is a feeling of satisfaction and pleasure in ones own achievements, Having a high opinion of oneself, Though expressing joy in something or someone, is attributed to the word pride sometimes, I believe that it is different that the Pride that the bible Is referring to.

When we look at the word Humble, Means opposite "Modest or low estimate of ones own importance.

All that we have comes from the Lord, It is not wrong to express joy in something or someone, but who are we expressing that joy to? I thank the Lord for my Children, and I have great joy in them, In that sense in english you can call that proud because I have Joy in what the Lord has given me, but the importance must be centered around Christ. Let all things be for Gods glory, the pride the bible is referring to is seeking your own glory, and having a high esteem in your own importance. Sometimes we get prideful in our knowledge, that blocks out correction. Give thanks to the Lord for everything, and take great joy in the blessings He's given you.

Jer 9:23 Thus says the LORD: "Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, Let not the mighty man glory in his might, Nor let the rich man glory in his riches;

Jer 9:24 But let him who glories glory in this, That he understands and knows Me, That I am the LORD, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight," says the LORD.

Good passage!

I think being thankful and being proud are two different things totally. I can be thankful for the food the Lord gives me, but it is very difficult in calling thankfulness for my children when it is actually pride in the areas that they succeed. I don't boast about my food, but I may boast about my child. That is pride. When I first heard this man teach this in the lesson I was opposed to it, but the more I dwell on it I have to admit that all pride may very well be sin. Even in those times when I try one of those politically correct answers and call it being thankful or something else. I admit that this is difficult because we are a prideful people, me included. Most likely this is simply something else that I need to deal with in light of scripture.

I was moved by the answer that josh-13 gave. In every case scripture must rule. God bless.

Looking up the word "pride" in the dictionary, it can also mean:

"Pleasure or satisfaction taken in an achievement, possession, or association: parental pride."

"a feeling of honour and self-respect; a sense of personal worth"

Would you consider these expressions to be sin?

Yes I think so. Do you think that Jesus had personal satisfaction in what He did? Or felt self honor? Or needed a sense of self worth? I don't think so. While I was opposed to the idea at first that all pride is sin I am now leaning that such is true. I hear people say that they are proud to be an American. That is pride and it IS sin.

This was the best response;

I think anything that lifts us up rather then God is pride and that is sin.

Jer 9:23 Thus says the LORD: "Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, Let not the mighty man glory in his might, Nor let the rich man glory in his riches;

Jesus based Himself on the Father, as should we, Our worth is only that Jesus payed the price for our sins, that He loves us even though we are not worthy.
