I always wondered that they didn't get hurt on the needles. But, I guess they got de-sensitized to them because they also added some protection from predators. I imagine the pressure of its body on the spines isnt quite as great as the mountain lion. Saguaro spines are thick but sharp and highly clustered at the tip of the cactus.
