My friend did a road trip through the states about 2 years ago. Along the way, she took pictures and notes of city names she passed through, and put them in her scrapbook. Other than State names, y'all have some funny city names. So do we......Go Home, Saskatchewan for example....

One thing I always wondered......someone once said there is a North and South Dekota, but no Dekota to be north and south of. Same with Carolina...... :)

OK - doesn't give name origins, but does give some good history. :)

The 13 Colonies

Virginia, IIRC, was named for Queen Elizabeth - "The Virgin Queen"

West Virginai is was a split off of Virginia during the American Civil War.

Pennsylvania was name for founder William Penn. The "sylvania" part is a common ending for towns in parts of Europe (i.e. - you've heard of Transylvania? :) ).

New York named after York, England.

Georgia named for King George of England.

Deleware named after a Native American tribe in that region.

All I can think of at the moment.

NY was named after an area of Great Britain. Used to live there.

Washington was named after our first Pres. George. There is a town named George in WA. George, Washington

I searched on Google for a while, this is what it came up with..

California:

Origin of State's Name: Named by the Spanish after Califia, a mythical paradise in a Spanish romance written by Montalvo in 1510.
