In South Africa we are about to choose a new Chief Justice of the Constitutional court, the highest position in the land. A judge, surname Mogoege (don’t try to pronounce), has been put forward by our president. The interview process is now on, and it is streamed live, which is a good thing. Mogoege’s nomination has been ripped to shreds by the press, saying he is too young (50 something), inexperienced and that he is a homophobe. (amongst others) Come the first question.... “Explain why the press think you are a homophobe?” The answer floored me. Words to this effect.... “I am not a homophobe, I am a Christian, and I will serve my office based on this”. “Sex is meant to be between a man and woman, and same sex marriage is a sin in terms of scripture”, “I and many other judges, who are Christian, who will serve with me believe that this is the truth”. I continue to listen to the interview, and will be interested what else comes out. He has asked to be allowed to address the committee on Faith and Government! So far he has my vote...
