Sorry St luis anyway a clearly Spansh name so presumably it was a Spanish speaking arrea at the time of its establishment in 1930, well after it gained statehood in1912.

The UK most other European countries have bilingual regions and Canada is a bilingual nation. Why do some in the US feel so threatened by the idea of people speaking Spanish or other languages? Particularly in areas which were settled by Spanish speakers prior to incorporation into the USA.

You have a very sad and poor understanding of what America is all about.

My Great Grandfather came to the Nation at the turn of the 20 century. He didn't speak a lick of English, but he came to better himself and to become part of a greater vision. A melting pot of rich heritages and cultures. Not separate identities, One Nation, of many disparate cultures. They spoke Italian at home, but used English when out in society and working. One of their first hopes was to learn the language so that they could be part of this once great society. They held onto what was the best parts of themselves, but also strove to become a part of the greater whole made up of many individuals exercising their Liberty. Of course that's a distant thought now because the collective is what matters and not individual Liberty. The freedom to pursue ones dreams is a distant second now to the entitlement society.

Rugged Individualism is a foreign thought in Europe and soon here in America. It's what made the West great and the collective is what is ruining it.

She can speak Spanish all she wants. She just needs to do it at home. Nothing earned is nothing gained my dear friend Amor of course that too is a foreign thought in Europe as well.:o

But why can,t she stand for election if she wants? And why shouldn't people have a right to vote for if they want? Up to the 1960s literacy testswere used to stop African Americans from voting across the South So using language tests to ban people from politics has a dirty history.

As to immigrants kearning English, well people have been speaking Spanish in Arizona longer than they've been speaking English so why should they be forced to conform to gain what should be their political right?

The thing you fail to understand is that a Nation implies unity. It's not the multi cultural utopia that secular humanism and most college professors love to imagine.

That's called anarchy.

You should look at the Old Testament some time.

So conformity not the much vaunted individualism refered to earlier, with committees and officials weeding out unsuitable candidates in elections. A society where democracy takes second place to political correctness

Matthiajah you are the one rejecting the right of the people of San Luis to exercise their individual democratic liberties by telling them they can only vote for candidates who conform.

But why can,t she stand for election if she wants?

Why can't Spanish-speaking people take the time to learn English?

Our laws and documents are all written in English. A governing official who has has difficulty communicating the language of the written law and documents can create a lot of problems.

And why shouldn't people have a right to vote for if they want?

I missed something - where is it mentioned a legal citizen is being barred from voting?

Actually, No! No one has denied her the right to speak Spanish and even teach it to her children in the privacy of her own home. No one has denied anyone the right to Vote.

..and the serpent was more subtle than any other beast in the field, which the Lord God had made.........

Don't you just love exposition? You're good at this my friend.

Is Lord God unkind or less than Righteous to demand a standard?:noidea:

We're not a Democracy, we're a Represenative Republic.:rolleyes: No one has denied her right to run, what they have done is asked her to accept a standard. It's not that difficult really. However, what we have here is someone who's been here a while and hasn't striven to better herself. Probably while sucking on the teet of our fair society while others have worked hard and now she wants to Lead.

You're the one practicing Politcal Correctness by not actually demanding a standard by which we can determine whether or not someone is eligible. Remember, Political Correctness is how we arrived at hav ing a President of the U.S. who is unqualified because we weren't allowed to vette him.

You can demand no standard at all in Europe all you want and we will stand by and continue to watch you devoured by Islam, but it isn't going to happen here my friend. Too many educated folks here who understand that there has to be some standard for Leadership. We don't lead by committee, yet thank God.:emot-handshake:

amor, we have standards set for those who want to run for office. Having a good command of the English language is one of those standards. If someone wants to run for office, they need to meet those standards. It is not a free for all over here.
