I agree with you that its a great word. I guess its just not as catchy as "prophesy".

I can only guess this section is based on scripture related discussions and prophesy is for those, who have them, to share their dreams and vissions.

Dear Ray:

Eschatology is the branch of Christian theology which concerns the end times. As such, it includes prophecy, but prophecy is only one element in the whole picture.

You might ask: Why do we Christians really need to learn about eschatology? Why not just be led by the Spirit? The reason is that the Christian faith is strongly intellectual, and we need to make sense when we discuss such matters with other Christians, especially those who may have differing viewpoints. Another reason is that many strange and heretical ideas have accumulated around the idea of the end times, and a formal eschatological system, however dusty it might seem, is helpful for us to avoid mistaken ideas.

One thing that makes eschatology an interesting topic is that there are many honest and valid opinions. Unlike other aspects of Christian theology, eschatology is a diversified topic, and differing opinions, like the ones expressed in this forum, are open for discussion and vigorous debate. I have strong eschatological views, and these may or may not coincide with those of other members. But that is half the fun!
