While Christ was on earth, He limited His ministry to Israel, and on a few occasions he went outside the borders of Israel. However, after Pentecost, the apostles went from Jerusalem, to Judea and Samaria, and then to the uttermost part of the earth with the Gospel. While the apostles were on earth they also performed many miracles. So the fact that Christianity spread throughout the Roman Empire, and churches were established in all the cities of the provinces, and beyond, was "the greater works" done through the apostles by the Holy Spirit.
