You see this was written specific to His disciples who were the ones who heard Him speak andlive the New Covenant of His Blood... and it is referring to The holy Scripture that was to be written! Now we have The Holy Spirit within, and in others designated by Him to be teachers... All must be verified by written Scripture. At any given time The Holy Spirit will speak to us through others, The Word, even in creation itself we must be humbly willing to accept it through a hermeneutic process of verification through reason formed by His Word. The holy spirit is "the spirit of truth" If we feed on Christ's flesh, which is the word of God, contained in the scriptures and no where else, then the holy spirit will be given to us measure by measure. The more we come closer to God's word, the closer he comes to us, To receive the "spirit of truth" simply means receiving understanding of God's word. And the truth is a powerful tool, for without it we could be easily decieved. Our faith must not be blind, but backed with substance/knowledge. And every man has a different measure of the HS, according to his efforts. So when one reads the scriptures, with a pure heart in searching for truth and guidance, the holy spirit's job is to give us understanding of those scriptures. Sometimes we get stuck on the understanding of verses, because the answer is somewhere else in more detail. But if we continue reading, we will eventually find that answer, and make that connection, this is the holy spirit doing it's job, but we have to put the effort in first. It's a labour of love. Man has not the authority to give out the holy spirit to others, only Christ can give it because he sees deep into the heart. In other words, if I tell you the interpretation of a scripture, I cannot make you understand, only the holy spirit can, and if I tell you an interpretation which is wrong, the holy spirit will alert you, and you will go on a mission to find in scripture to prove me wrong, hopefully because you love the truth, and care for my soul, and not because you love arguing.
