 I am from Michigan...and the weirdest thing...we are having a snowstorm right now...but as I was looking outside I saw this bright flash...and then shortly thereafter thunder. I have never seen anything like that before. It lasted for about 20 minutes or so. It was awesome to see....with the blowing snow on the ground and in the air and then the flash of bright light...wow !!!!

I guess I'm a weather dummie...anyone ever see anything like this before?

Love and Blessings,

Angel

I can't explain it, but I have seen that happen only once in my life. It was right around Christmas, and we where have heavy snow fall, then the sky started to light up all over with lightning. It was so cool. All I can say is the our God is an awesome God!

Well, I am a ametuer meterologist and I chase tornados in the summer. I will explain thunder snow to you or will do my best. A lot of times in the winter when a storm is coming, what we call warm advection begins ahead of the storm. Warmer air and moister air goes up and over the realtively dryer cool air at the surface. This makes the air aloft unstable as it is lifted over the surface air. Sometimes in the winter if the warm advection is strong enough, elevated thunderstorms form. Thus aloft it is warm but closer to the ground its cold enough for snow. This convective snow can become heavy because of the extra lifting to the condensation layer of the atmosphere and the thunderstorms forming. when we have thundersnow depending on how much moisture is available snowfall rates can increase to 3-4 inches per hour. Well hope that helps !! :24:

I too am from Michigan (born and raised) but now live in Southern Calif. I did see that a couple of times when I lived in Michigan. Your right it's weird. As I said I live in Calif now and a couple weeks ago we had tons of rain. It was cold, like just above freezing and it was raining and it was thundering and lightening. I thought it was to cold for it to thunder and lightening. Weather patterns all over world are strange.

Thomas, are there many tornados in Mn? I live in the Texas panhandle, and we have quite a few.

I experienced thundersnow a couple of times. It's really cool. But one night, many years ago, we were driving out of town, trying to get home in the middle of a snowstorm, and when it would lightning, everything would turn eerie green. It was spooky. :24:
