He was saddened by the hardness of the hearts of people around Him particularly 2. He was saddened by the state of humanity who was not created to die 3. All 4 of those things were going on the entire time Jesus was on earth, yet this time he cried. I still think he was moved by the grief of those around him and showed his empathy for their feelings.
