"A tearful governor of Jakarta denied on Tuesday he had intended to insult the Koran at the start of his blasphemy trial in the Indonesian capital, which is seen as a test of religious freedom in the world's largest Muslim-majority nation.

"Around 100 Muslim protesters calling for the jailing of Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama chanted "God is great" outside the court, while supporters of the ethnic Chinese Christian sang the national anthem."

Everyone on earth are able to exercise their freedom of religion. The question surrounding that choice then becomes, what are they willing to lose to do so?

God be with Basuki Tjahaja Purnama .

hi neb

Sorry but I am a bit puzzled.  I am wondering if the title of this thread might be incorrect?

I realise the thread title was likely taken from the title of the article in the OP link....   but I am wondering if the title of the article itself might be incorrect?

I am rather puzzled .. because I have followed this situation a little bit in recent times .. i.e. from news online etc..  and as far as I know I don't think the charges are regarding 'praising Jesus' ?  Perhaps the author of this article title has made a mistake?

Or are there other news sites with any info about the 'praising Jesus' claim?  If so could you please let me know?  Thanks very much.

I am sorry, I do not have a clue.

The article says:

"It is clear what I said in the Thousand Islands was not intended to interpret the (Koran), let alone to insult Islam or the ulema," said Purnama, who was responding after the prosecutor read out the charges.

But it never revealed what was said.

Well, in Islam Jesus is called, Isa. He is not believed to be the son of God because the Koran says Allah begat no son.

Rather, he is a prophet.

In the case of this governor, I think this is political shenanigans working to unseat a Christian from the office of governor. Because Jakarta has over 300,000 Muslims in majority .

I went searching for details and being his alleged remarks are said to have been edited in the media coverage that circulated afterward it's hard to find .

There is this from Pam Geller's site:

Jakarta’s Christian Governor on Trial for “Insulting the Koran,” Hundreds of Thousand of Muslims RIOT

.....What are the allegations?

While campaigning for the elections in September, Mr Purnama made a speech where he said that Islamic groups who were using a Koranic verse to lobby against him were deceiving voters.

The verse is interpreted by some as prohibiting Muslims from living under the leadership of a non-Muslim.

Islamic groups said he had criticised the Koran and lodged complaints with police. Mr Purnama apologised but denied blasphemy.

His supporters say that a video of the event which was widely circulated had been edited and subtitled to make it appear as if he was criticising the verse, rather than those who invoked it.

The president promised a transparent investigation and police officially declared Mr Purnama a suspect on 16 November.

You're right, the title is odd.

Yes.  The title of the article in the OP is quite possibly wrong.  Which means the title of this thread is possibly wrong too....

I wish that whomever was the article title author .. would have taken more care to not make any mistake.. which could cause confusion..

I am not sure how widely reported this case is in the USA media .. but in some other countries.. it has been in the news.

Accuracy is often important..

Sorry just some personal thoughts.  No offence intended at all to anyone.

Thanks.

Well...the OP is the article. That's kind of how it works...

Not really. It synopsizes the body of the article itself.

Moody Radio linked on the homepage here > http://www.worthychristianchat.com/cbnnews-radio.php Has an report on this case via CBN news. The governors offense apparently was daring to say that Muslims in Jakarta could be governed by non-Muslims. It is a far more detailed report than what we've found thus far in print media I think.
