I have a humorus story.

In Organic Chemistry lecture we started going over carbohydrates.

When we got to cellulose (the stuff in plant cell walls), our instructor mentioned how humans can't digest cellulose, and we talked of that a bit.

Then he asked if we thought it possible to bioengineer the ability to digest cellulose in humans? Would it work?

I first said it wouldn't because if you notice the animals who can digest cellulose do so through a second stomach, it's bacteria that actually breaks down the cellulose, and the animal regurgitates and re-chews the bacterially-digested food. How many people would want that?

Another student argued that if we were given the gene the bacteria use, then that wouldn't be neccessary and thus possible.

But then the instructor asked if such would be a good thing or a bad thing?

The good, of course, being that we wouldn't have a food shortage anymore. If you're hungry you can just go outside a graze!

The bad though would be the waste product of cellulose digestion - CH4 - otherwise known as methane gas! Now that gas has to get out somehow, one end or the other!

And what effect would the extra methane in the atmosphere do?

But what if you could collect the methane you produce and use it to power your car?

(See how humorous these analytical discussions can get?) :emot-hug:

But going back to the bioengineering, my question then was would it interfere with our ability to eat meat - after all, none of the animals that can digest cellulose are likewise capable of eating meat.

So, then the instructor thought about what if we tested this on a lion and made the lion eat grass? Well, what effect would that have on the food chain if now the lions are competing with the other animals for grass?

One of the other students suggested you then bioengineer the deer to eat meat, so then you have the deer hunting the lions.

We were  all over the place!

There was that one episode of the original star trek where the grass was acidic and burned the feet of the crew. What if grass became carniverous? :P
