I guess I had just assumed that we were all called to do the will of Yahweh it whatever capacity possible, though some are more gifted in certain areas today. One may be an excellent teacher, another not so much, but that doesn't mean that if the opportunity to teach presents itself we should not take it. These are jsut my initial thoughts, I really would need to do a more in depth study of scripture to provide you with a more comprehensive and Bible-backed argument. In those verses Paul writes the words, "...some as..." Therefore, I think it's pretty clear that God has called some believers to fulfill these functions, and others he has called to fulfill others. Not all are prophets, are they? or teachers? or miracle-workers? 30 Not all have gifts of healing, not all speak in tongues, not all interpret, do they? 31 Eagerly seek the better gifts. I think this answers the question in and of itself. 1 cor 13:1 I may (add gift hear) speak in the tongues of men, even angels; but if I lack love, I have become merely blaring brass or a cymbal clanging 13:13 But for now, three things last trust, hope, love; and the greatest of these is love. Seems all the gifts are not for everyone. But they mean nothing if love is not present. Note as well, one is said to be able to apply the gift but not possess love? Thus nullifying the whole gift. Some to the unsaved (evangelists), some to the body of Christ and some to both in some measure (teachers, pastors, prophets and apostles). It is possible that we all fit into at least one of these if we mature enough - it's just a matter of defining the role. But that's a guess. But I also believe they can be given to individuals as a major gift. You have the ability to be all of them at any given time, but one of them God can focus your life on.
