There will be a significant withdrawal,” the official told AFP on condition of anonymity. The United States first sent troops to Afghanistan in response to the September 11, 2001 attacks, and there are now around 14,000 U.S. troops in the country, working with NATO’s Resolute Support non-combat mission to train, advise and assist the Afghan security forces, or in separate counter-terrorism operations. More than 2,400 U.S. personnel have been killed in the conflict, and more than $900 billion has been spent. The news was first published by the Wall Street Journal which reported that more than 7,000 troops would be returning from Afghanistan; AP put the figure at up to half of the 14,000 currently deployed; CNN reported nearly 7,000 troops will be withdrawn; and Reuters reported that more than 5,000 troops would be withdrawn. https://thedefensepost.com/2018/12/21/trump-decides-significant-withdrawal-us-troops-afghanistan/
