(Daniel 5:2) Belshazzar, when he tasted the wine, commanded that the vessels of gold and of silver that Nebuchadnezzar his father had taken out of the temple in Jerusalem be brought, that the king and his lords, his wives, and his concubines might drink from them. (Daniel 5:3) Then they brought in the golden vessels that had been taken out of the temple, the house of God in Jerusalem, and the king and his lords, his wives, and his concubines drank from them. (Daniel 5:4) They drank wine and praised the gods of gold and silver, bronze, iron, wood, and stone. [ESV] This was a fulfillment of the Prophecy of Isaiah given in: (Isaiah 45:2) “I will go before you and level the exalted places, I will break in pieces the doors of bronze and cut through the bars of iron, [ESV] The image of the hand writing on the wall really shook up the king as it would to anyone else. This prophecy was given by Isaiah between 800 - 700 BC, well before Daniel. (Daniel 5:5) Immediately the fingers of a human hand appeared and wrote on the plaster of the wall of the king's palace, opposite the lampstand. And the king saw the hand as it wrote. (Daniel 5:6) Then the king's color changed, and his thoughts alarmed him; his limbs gave way, and his knees knocked together. [ESV] To truly understand Daniel one needs to understand Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezra, and the Herodotus 1.191 and Joseph Antiquities 11.1.1-3. Since Joseph and Herodotus Antiquities is not scripture so I won't print them here. But the story of the this prophecy, is just beginning. We haven't even talked about Cyrus yet.
