What a way to describe the LORD and his might! And David goes on and on about it. How many times to we do this in gratitude to God over his grace and mercy to us. Or do we just whisper a perfunctory "Thank you, Jesus" and go on with our life. We will take this psalm in bites. The Lord Is My Rock and My Fortress To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David, the servant of the Lord, who addressed the words of this song to the Lord on the day when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul. He said: ……….The Lord also thundered in the heavens, and the Most High uttered his voice, hailstones and coals of fire. 14 And he sent out his arrows and scattered them; he flashed forth lightnings and routed them. 15 Then the channels of the sea were seen, and the foundations of the world were laid bare at your rebuke, O Lord, at the blast of the breath of your nostrils. 16 He sent from on high, he took me; he drew me out of many waters. 17 He rescued me from my strong enemy and from those who hated me, for they were too mighty for me. 18 They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the Lord was my support. 19 He brought me out into a broad place; he rescued me, because he delighted in me. 20 The Lord dealt with me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he rewarded me. 21 For I have kept the ways of the Lord, and have not wickedly departed from my God. 22 For all his rules were before me, and his statutes I did not put away from me. 23 I was blameless before him, and I kept myself from my guilt. 24 So the Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight...……. [1] David Guzik makes note of this - "This Psalm is virtually the same as the Psalm sung by David at the very end of his life, as recorded in 2 Samuel 22. It is likely that David composed this song as a younger man; yet in his old age David could look back with great gratitude and sing this song again, looking at his whole life. " [2] David speaks of the "cleanness of his hands", how he "kept the ways of the Lord", was "blameless", and how God had "rewarded me" because of his own righteousness. I'll admit that when I read statements of these from David, I sometimes get a little put out and think, "He was far from being blameless". I don't know if anyone else gets that feeling. But the title of this psalm says that David wrote this after being delivered [yet again] from Saul who wanted him dead and tried several times and in several ways to do that. David WAS blameless in these instances because David did not fight back. David was much more skilled at combat. Saul was usually sitting under a tree when things got rough. David NEVER attempted to kill Saul thought he had plenty of opportunity. His reason? Saul was God's anointed. Even though God had taken his hand off of Saul and had David anointed early in his life - David did not attempt to reign until Saul died and NOT by David's own hand. THAT takes great strength and ironically great humility before God. So in that respect, David WAS blameless and God protected him from these attacks over and over because of it. David Guzik says that God will treat us the way that we treat others and him sort of like how Jesus says that to be forgiven you must forgive others. Quote 31 For who is God, but the Lord? And who is a rock, except our God?— To me, this is one of those rhetorical questions - not requiring an answer, but being more of a declarative statement. David says the rules of God "warn" us and are better than gold and sweet, dripping honey. They protect us from three things he says: error - honest mistakes and transgressions, but sin nonetheless hidden faults - sins that we guiltily keep hidden from others presumptuous sins - open and public rebellion that seems not to matter to the sinner - transgressions that we ourselves may have warned others about and taught others not to do these things and yet we do them ourselves with relish and glee - boldly and brazenly If David, a man after God's own heart, had to pray for God to keep HIM from these things and confessed that our protection from them is God's rules and law.... ….it would behoove us to copy David's seriousness in this. 1 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

A Psalm of David. May the Lord answer you in the day of trouble! May the name of the God of Jacob protect you! 2 May he send you help from the sanctuary and give you support from Zion! 3 May he remember all your offerings and regard with favor your burnt sacrifices! Selah 4 May he grant you your heart's desire and fulfill all your plans! 5 May we shout for joy over your salvation, and in the name of our God set up our banners! May the Lord fulfill all your petitions! 6 Now I know that the Lord saves his anointed; he will answer him from his holy heaven with the saving might of his right hand. 7 Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. 8 They collapse and fall, but we rise and stand upright. 9 O Lord, save the king!
