What is God like?

Second chapter in the book (Tozer – Knowledge of the Holy)

Tozer states: When we try to imagine what God is like we  must of necessity  use that-which-is-not God as the raw material for our minds to work on; hence whatever we visualize God to be, He is not, for we have constructed our  image out of that which He has made and what He has made is not God.  If we insist upon trying to imagine Him,  we end with an idol, made not with hands but  with thoughts; and an idol of  the mind is as offensive to God as an idol of the hand.

Left to ourselves we tend immediately to reduce God to manageable  terms. We  want  to get Him  where we can use Him,  or at least know where He  is when we need Him.  We want a God we can in some  measure control.  We  need the feeling of  security that comes from  knowing what God is like, and what He is  like is of course a composite of all the religious pictures we have seen, all the best people we have known or heard about, and all the sublime ideas we have entertained.

Tower states in his final conclusion:

What is God like?” If  by that question we mean “What is God like  in Himself?” there is no answer. If we mean “What has God disclosed about Himself that the reverent reason can comprehend?” there is, I believe,  an answer both full and satisfying. For while the name  of  God is secret  and His essential nature  incomprehensible, He in condescending love has by revelation declared  certain things to be true of Himself. These we call His attributes. Sovereign Father, heavenly King, Thee we now  presume to sing; Glad  thine attributes confess, Glorious all, and  numberless. Charles Wesley

So this question Tozer presents is What is God like?
What do you see, can you describe God or can you only describes attributes?
Being reminded that the attributes are a quality or feature regarded as a characteristic or inherent part of someone or something.

Let's research God's word! I have written a very limited look into God!

God is light: (1John 1:5 )This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all
God is spirit: (John 4:24) God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.
God is a consuming fire:(Deuteronomy 4:24 ) For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.
God is a judge:(Psalms 50:6) And the heavens proclaim his righteousness, for God himself is judge. Selah

Attributes of God:
God is love:(1 John 4:16 ) And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him
God is our help:(Psalms 54:4) Surely God is my help; the Lord is the one who sustains me.
God is righteous:(Psalms 116:5) The LORD is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion
God is holy:(Isaiah 43:15)"I am the LORD, your Holy One, The Creator of Israel, your King.
God is faithful: (1 Corinthians 10:13)
No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful....

What God is not:
A Human man:(Numbers 23:19 ) God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?

So what do you say, What is God like?

I say God is:
“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.”Revelation 1:8

My answer to What is God like is: he's like my breath, the very life of my being. He's always there but is not seen with physical eyes, however he is always felt, needed and working...for without him I am dead, the same as my breath. The breath I take is an absolute necessity, not an option. For me, this is what God is like to me.

Thanks for reading and participating!
May God bless you ?
