The word major and minor prophet is in reference to the length of what was written.  Ergo, the major prophets wrote long books of Old Testament prophecy and the minor prophets wrote the short[er] books of the Old Testament containing prophecy.  And the minor prophets are directed at a more narrowly focused time frame and/or people group.  It's a man-made term.

I've never heard anyone say that the 24 elders in Revelation 4 are the Old Testament prophets.   The Bible doesn't say that. And I would say that this is impossible as there were hundreds and hundreds of prophets [and prophetesses] in the Old Testament and even in the New.

I'd like to know where you read that.  The Bible contains both the major [long books] and minor [short books - narrow focus/people group] prophets:

Major prophets: [FOUR, but five books] Isaiah, Jeremiah, Daniel, Ezekiel [Jeremiah also writing Lamentations]

Minor prophets: [TWELVE] Habakkuk, Joel, Jonah, Nahum, Amos, Zechariah, Malachi, Hosea, Haggai, Zephaniah, Micah, and Obadiah.

There are many articles on the internet that explain the 24 elders.  It has to do with the Hebrew Book, the Old Testament.

The Hebrew canon contains 24 books, one for each of the scrolls on which these works were written in ancient times. The Hebrew Bible is organized into three main sections: the Torah, or “Teaching,” also called the Pentateuch or the “Five Books of Moses”; the Neviʾim, or Prophets; and the Ketuvim, or Writings

The old testament through study applies to everyone today just as it did in Jesus's time.
