I've been reading a lot ABOUT Christianity... a lot of Lee Strobel, C.S. Lewis, et al, and I borrowed a Bible from a friend, but I think it's time I got my own and spent some quality time with it. That being said.... what version or translation do you read? And why? What would you recommend for someone looking for their first Bible?

Thanks! :)

I'm sure this topic has been covered in another thread, I just can't remember where :)

You'll get lots of opinions about what is the "right" and "wrong" bible to read.

I read my bible daily. What does it matter which version it is? I make use of other things to clarify what I don't fully understand....ie: the wisdom and knowledge of my pastor, online bible tools etc.

:)

New Living Translation and New International Version. The psalms of the NIV move me more than any version. And the NLT is the version my Bible group uses. And it is easier to understand. I own a NKJV, NASB, NIV, and NLT. And I sometimes paralel them. Although the translation of "The Lord is my Shepard. I shall not want" in the NKJV, and NIV. It's translated in the NLT as "The Lord is my Shepard. I have all that I need." I know we are not meant to laugh at this psalm. But the "I have all that I need" version(NLT) made me laugh. Why I don't know. It might have been the direct way it's stated.

Overall the NLT is my personal favorite.

BC, spend your time reading through a lot of different translations and settle on one that you will read.

Stay away from "The Message" and "The Living Bible" because these are not translations of the Bible. Rather, they are paraphrases of the Bible. That means it isn't translated from the original languages/manuscripts. It is simply a man's understanding of an english translation.

Here are my favorite translations in this order:

NKJV

KJV

NASB

NIV

There are many, many other translations... but, these are all solid versions.

King James Version for me :)

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Well.. as someone said in "Pilgrim Country" on Ladies Retreat(Except she said Jesus Christ)

Right On KJV ROcks!!! :)

Or as we would say in my school(once again, not KJV)..

KJV rocks my socks!

On a more serious note.. I prefer to use the KJV becasue I believe that it is the errant word of God. I believe that although the other versions might contain God's Word and have the plan of salvation and still be able to help someone to grow.. I believe that through modern translation God's Word has been changed... therefore, I prefer the KJV :P I have heard that many of the other versions are pretty good.. but I dont' know personally..

I read the KJV only. I personally don't like modern versions for various reasons. The reaons depending on which version. What I will say though is I would not go anywhere near the NIV, The Message and the Refule.

"The Expositor's Study Bible" from Jimmy Swaggart Ministries. It is a King James Version Bible but it has commentary all the way through. However, instead of the comentary being seperate from the text, it is imbedded in the text directly after the scripture it is related to, in parenthesis and it's red in color while the scripture is black in color.

IT ROCKS!! It's really good commentary and it's helping me understand what i'm reading big time.
