Ian,

I'll try to find them, there was an article about it in New Scientist as I recall. Essentially there's an orbitting satellite taking a very very precise measure of gravitational mass over several months, it's up there now.

I'll try to find it.

Nik

Nik, what tests are these? Do you have any links to information about them? It sounds very interesting.

So, can we all agree then that there are no real laws, theories or hypotheses that scientists agree on?

* Myth 1. Hypotheses turn into theories which eventually become enshrined as laws.

* Myth 2. Hypotheses are really only educated guesses.

* Myth 3. There exists a scientific method that is general and universal.

* Myth 4. Certainty results when facts are accumulated and analyzed.

* Myth 5. The scientific method leads to absolute truth.

* Myth 6. Science is less creative than it is procedural.

* Myth 7. All questions posed by the universe can be answered via the scientific method.

* Myth 8. High objectivity is the hallmark of science.

* Myth 9. Scientific knowledge is based mainly on experiment.

* Myth 10. Scientists always review and check the work of their colleagues.

So let's add another myth to the list.

Myth 11. There are no scientific laws that are universally accepted.

Please, learn the difference between laws, theories and hypotheses.

Ian

Why did you think that you needed to toss in a smart little comment like that?

Couldn't you say something like "Artsylady, if you are confused about the difference between the three, maybe I could help you" or "I'd be glad to help you understand that there are differences between the three" or something like that.

Really, it's pithy little comments like that that shows your lack of respect concerning the intelligence of another human being.

Is it really that hard to play nice on this board?

On second thought, I'm probably guilty of the same thing, at times.

I guess we are both to learn?

Ted,

With all due respect, and although I agree that Ian's method is overly abrasive at times, it is very difficult when you make the difference between the three clear so many times and yet you are ignored.

Whereas I don't advocate rudeness, I do sometimes feel like giving up on some people. Human weakness I suppose.

It's ok, like I said, I'm guilty of it too, I reckon.

Sorry I jumped like that, but she's a great personal friend, and this was one of the first things I saw here after a rather trying day.

My apology is offered as well.

I think I was slightly annoyed to find out that since I am an atheist, I am not allowed to post anywhere else on the board, even humour, or latest news. No excuse though.

You bring up a point here that deserves an explanation:

Not long ago, this board was swamped and basically invaded by another site's compliment of members. This site was not only primarily an atheist site, but one which was rather distasteful, at that. Some of their members decided to flood the board here with all kinds of nasty things. Much of that was in the "Need help or advice" area. Needless to say, some of the advice given wasn't too Godly! LOL.

Anyway, while dealing with that, the owner basically decided to limit non-believer's access to a few thread areas, primarily in the outer court. The reference is simple as it refers to the Jewish Temples where access to the inner ares were limited as well, to those of God's work, rather than the entire congregation.

Based on that model, and that he wants to keep this area open for a focus for non-believers to learn about what God has offered us, according to the Bible, we have the areas in the current configuration.

Based on past troubles, and the desire to incorporate the model of the OT Temple, we have what we do today.

Plus, he owns the site! LOL.

Anyway, that said, let me be clear on one more point: it has been my experience since joining here that most (90% would be my guess) of the people that come here that do not believe in God conduct themselves with dignity, honor, and genuine respect for their fellow man. It is truly appreciated by all of us here that believe in God, and we are grateful for their conduct. We, of course, think of ourselves as a family in Christ that should always have our doors open for visitors to come in and relax for a while, learn about God in a respectful manner, all in the hopes that maybe we can make a difference in someone's lives. If we are not able to make that difference, we can at least try to be civil enough that people can walk away (if they so desire) knowing that they were treated with respect and kindness. Who knows, maybe one day someone will look back and understand what it's all about. I'd hate to think that I had turned someone away from Christ simply because I acted like an idiot to them while they were here.

Yeah, we fuss and fight a bit, both between ourselves, and with people that do not believe in God, but I would bet that people like Nik can testify that once respect is established between us, most of the hard times are soon forgotten and things just kinda move on.

Anyway, there are no rules that prohibit disagreement, but there are against doing so rudely, or in a manner which brings the place to a point of being nothing more than a rude and disrespectful nut house.

That said, I still fail at times. Sometimes the desire to pick on someone just can't be helped in the heat of discussion.

I'm learning. :)

Anyway, have a good night!

t.
