They are so special, they ascend into heaven in their flesh. The return of Christ is refered to as the day of the Lord. It's when he stands on mt Olivet. Yes it supposed to be a terrible day of wrath. It was Peter who said the heavens will burn with a fervent heat and the elements shall melt. As for the two witnesses, they are removed from Christ's kingdom before the last trump. Mathew 13:41 The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. Notice they are removed from his kingdom when he comes. They just wasn't allowed to stick around. They already gone bye bye.
