Hi @Tristen .

A while ago you said:

"If your brain tells you that you are addicted to smoking;

'I thank you Father – that I have the spiritual fruit of self-control; and that I am free indeed' (Galatians 5:22-23, John 8:36). Say this - even as you exhale the smoke. Bring the power of God's Word right into the midst of your circumstance."

Do you think all instances of inhaling/exhaling indicate the presence of addiction?

Hey Farouk,

Not "all instances of inhaling/exhaling indicate the presence of addiction". Each human will have unique physiological and psychological responses to potentially addicting stimuli.

However, all the types of smoking that I'm familiar with have the potential to produce "addiction" in some form or another. Most include highly addictive substances - i.e. those substances known to cause the common physiological brain responses associated with "addiction". It is therefore unwise to risk enslaving ourselves to such behaviors - which is why the 'powers that be' market their addictive products to the young and unwise.

It is especially unwise for those professing to be Christians.

Matthew 6:24
No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other.

Romans 6:16
Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey

@Raised2newlife Hoping the quitting is still going well.

(I don't believe in the guilt-manipulation that goes on, though.)

I quit in 1985. It is not even a temptation anymore.  For anyone who is quitting it is essential to now consider themself as a non-smoker. It absolutely gets easier as the days and weeks go by. Don't quit quitting.

@Raised2newlife Glad it worked for you all those years ago.

Some ppl still like the smell after quitting; others don't any more.

@Tristen I take your point.

What do you think of occasional social smoking?

@Anne2

Re. smoking, the historical record shows that in some parts of the the US in the 19th century it was very widespread after church for women to smoke.

(Not something that Fundamentalists like to be reminded of.)

My other comment also would be, Quit if you can, but don't beat yourself up about it.

@kwikphilly Glad you were able to quit, decades back!

What do you think of occasional social smoking among those who are not addicted?

(And what do you think also of those who go after women who might occasionally smoke socially, on the grounds that it's supposedly not 'ladylike'?)

I quit about 20 years ago.I just had to make up my mind before I quit .I still love the smell of a cigarette if I get around anyone smoking one,but I don't have any urge to go back.
