I was addicted to nicotine for 51 yrs. (I) could never quit.
But I haven't smoked for 10 yrs now. I was delivered.
The fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
This man prayed over me, to our deliverer. I was delivered.
I Give all the glory to God.

@Sower Glad you managed to quit.........

May sound petty, but to an addict, it's a miracle.

Thanks farouk..

I can remember as a kid at the grocery store. People smoked whil;e shopping. ..People smoked in hospitals, unless an oxygen sign was present. Nothing was thought about it. .. my daughter there.. A nurse and former smoker. She quite around 20 ish. Not sure when she started, but in those teen years somewhere. I was made aware when the house caught fire one day!!!!. She is also tattooed, very discreetly though.

I myself did not start until 9th grade.

@Anne2 Like you said, back, ppl indeed smoked naturally.

Among factory workers - huge numbers in often stressful environments from WW1 onwards - they smoked naturally.

Nurses - again, often in stressful work environments - smoked naturally.

Not now so much, but mothers would often leave their cigarette packs open within reach of their teen daughters and then smoke together naturally; it didn't take long for a teen to learn to inhale. As you know.

But anyway now it's good that ppl seem more aware that there is a real option not to smoke at all.

Hi @Coruscating I think you indicated you never smoked.

Excellent.

I think maybe ppl who once smoked but quit, and then those who never smoked, might sometimes have varying perspectives towards those who do still smoke.

Kind of, Well, I used to do it myself so I won't be too hard on ppl.

I think most of us had to overcome a bad habit, as we tend to find comfort in stuff that are pleasurable yet destructive. For instance, I would eat like an 8 year old, home alone. So, it is easy to sympathize with someone who had to overcome nicotine and all the ritual that smoking involves. Discipline is a challenge to most of us.

Edit: Deleted the rest, because I misread your post. Sorry!

Thanks, @Coruscating , for your comments.

Anne2 is accurate when she wrote:

I think it's often forgotten that before the American Civil War it was in some areas widely customary for churchgoing women to smoke after church services. The wife of President Andrew Jackson - she died before she could become First Lady - was a noted smoker. This was all before the taboo culture of the Progressive Era (from which a lot of cultural tendencies of Fundamentalists were derived).

The whole thing of what is customary and what is not, is something that can greatly change over the decades and centuries.

But good indeed when ppl can quit. It's just that some ppl look at things from one angle only and then proceed to project onto others their assumptions in a rather fierce way.
