There are some cultures that pierce the ears of their child when they are babies. I think it is important that a son or daughter needs to know that the ears can get infected. They need to know the importance of caring for ear piercing. So whatever age that would be.

Yeah, highly variable and culturally dependent as well. I have heard of South American (Venezuelan) people getting their babies ears pierced (ETA: and MM, beats me to it).

Our daughter was about 8, I think.

Yes, well in some areas such as Latin America I think it's standard for maternity nurses to go round putting ear stud in, unless the mom specifically opts out.

I don't think there should be some "rule" about it, one way or another; but customs vary; often it does seem that teen girls have a better understanding of ear piercing care issues than their male counterparts, though a lot of young men want to have it done also.

Seems like girls have a more natural flair for ear piercing care than young men do, although so many young men do expect to put studs in their ears also.

It used to be more fashionable for men to have ear piercings years ago. I had my ears pierced a long time ago but I let the holes grow through and took out the earrings.

After trying earrings for a long while, some ppl do indeed prefer the minimalist/bare earlobes look. It does seem like if and when girls and young women have their first pair put in, they are a lot more likely to go for 2nd or more pairs put in also, than young men, who if at all they are more likely to be content with one pair or else even a single one. It's good in a sense to be comfortable with the fact that peoples individualisms are going to vary back and forth.

PS:  Every family is different, I guess. Janie Sheehan said:

My grandson was about 9 years old when he got one ear pierced, to wear one earring like his father. Nobody in my family could get a tattoo until they were over 18, all the females including my mother got little shamrocks on their left shoulder blade, about 1/4 inch in diameter.

It's so often a matter of family custom. Every family is different.

@teddyv It might be that the average age of daughters having it could be lower than for sons - if sons have it at all. I'm not sure, though. (...If you don't have sons?) Like you said, it's highly variable; and I think it would vary hugely in terms of family customs.

@Selah7 FYI, your various comments seem sensible on other topics; any wisdom for here?
