(Let's leave tattoos aside completely here...) This does maybe imply the question of which method is better for ear piercing: gun or needle? (A sub-text is that at a mall kiosk a teen that has not received much training may do gun piercing of the lobes and cartilage; whereas a well trained piercer might well use a needle, but at a perhaps substantially greater cost.) Any thoughts?

My mother iced my ear, then took a sewing needle and pushed it through. When that didnt heal properly, I got self piercing earrings.

Thanks, @ayin jade ; So I guess the questions should have been phrased, Gun, needle or self-piercers? Seems like you do prefer the idea of self-piercers, anyway..... The man or lady in the tattoo parlor that is trained piercer knows far more about what s/he is doing. The needle done by a professional at a tattoo parlor will give a clean, swift cut for stud or ring insertion manually; whereas the gun method can tear the flesh in the earlobe unnecessarily. I reckon some Christians who really want their ears pierced safely are - when it comes to tattoo parlors - a bit like 'shrinking violets', don't you think? But really if they want it done well, they should just confidently go into the tattoo/piercing parlor and have it done by a real pro...

Now the first one each side is so often just the precursor of more piercings; one only each side is often regarded a simply a minimalist way of doing it... (For the person to find the right method will kind of matter more particularly if doubles or more are to be gotten.)
