Bible Facts For Saturday Sabbatarians To Ponder or Squander

1. The Ten Commandments were reinstated in the
New Testament EXCEPT the Sabbath Command

The 1st commandment was reinstated in Matt. 22:37; 1 Cor. 8:5,6.

The 2nd commandment was reinstated in 1 Jn. 5:21. (Col. 3:5 and Eph. 5:5 broadens idolatry to include covetousness.)

The 3rd commandment was reinstated in Col. 3:8.

The 5th commandment was reinstated in Eph. 6:1-3.

The 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th commandments were reinstated in Rom. 13:8-10; Matt. 19:18; Gal. 5:14; 1 Cor. 6:9,10; and Gal. 5:19-21.

Sometimes Heb. 4:4 and 4:9,10 are thought to show the sabbath command was reinstated in the NT merely because the word "sabbath" is found. Let's look at this passage:

For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: "And on the seventh day God rested from all his work." And again in the passage above he says, "They shall never enter my rest." It still remains that some will enter that rest, and those who formerly had the gospel preached to them did not go in, because of their disobedience. Therefore God again set a certain day, calling it Today, when a long time later he spoke through David, as was said before: "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts." For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day. There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God's rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from his (Heb. 4:4-10).

Please note: That passage mentions only a "Sabbath rest," but not the keeping of the Sabbath, as Israel was commanded in the Old Testament! Furthermore, this "Sabbath rest" can not be equated with the keeping of the Saturday Sabbath, for even the Israelites who did keep it did not enter this "rest." A Christian finds his spiritual rest in Christ (Mt. 11:28). Only the 4th commandment, which is ceremonial rather than moral, was not reinstated in the New Testament, the covenant we are under today.

2. The Saturday Sabbath Command was a Memorial
The Saturday Sabbath command was given soon after the Israelites were delivered by Moses. Read of the crossing of the Red Sea in Exodus 14. The point of Exodus 19:1 was just three months after they left Egypt, with Exodus 20 (when the Ten Commandments were given) coming soon thereafter.

Exodus 20:1-17 is repeated in Deut. 5:6-21, where Moses expounds upon WHY it came and to WHOM the Sabbath command was given.

"Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the LORD your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the LORD your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day" (Deut. 5:15).

As Passover was an annual memorial festival for the Jews to celebrate in memory of God, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt while the firstborn of the Egyptians were struck dead (Ex. 12:14-30), the Saturday Sabbath was also for the Jews to remember weekly their historical deliverance from bitter slavery in Egypt, Deut. 5:15. The Saturday Sabbath command, therefore, was not a "creation ordinance" as some say, according to Deut. 5:15. Also consider the following:

"The Israelites are to observe the Sabbath, celebrating it for the generations to come as a lasting covenant. It will be a sign between me and the Israelites forever, for in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day he abstained from work and rested" (Exo 31:16,17).

3. Christians are permitted to make up their own minds about a Special Day
"One man considers one day more sacred than another; another man considers every day alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. He who regards one day as special, does so to the Lord ...." (Rom. 14:5,6).

If the Saturday Sabbath command was still enforced today, as in the Old Testament, such "liberty" would NEVER be allowed! Can you imagine such Christian "liberty" in setting up idols, committing adultery or stealing? Since the latter are clear commands (no idolatry, no adultery, no stealing), there is no such "liberty" regarding these matters, in contrast to a special weekly day to the Lord. Also remember, when Paul gave us Romans 14, he knew about Gen. 2:3 and the rest of the Old Testament. Among Saturday sabbatarians there does NOT exist this Christian liberty!

Col. 2:16,17 adds to all this by saying:

"Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink or with regard to a religious festival, a new moon celebration or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ."

If it is true, as some say, that the pope changed the Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday, then why did first-century Christians sometimes meet on Sunday?

On the first day of the week we came together to break bread. Paul spoke to the people and, because he intended to leave the next day, kept on talking until midnight (Acts 20:7).

On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made (1 Cor. 16:2).

4. The Gentile Christians were NOT commanded to keep the Saturday Sabbath
In Acts 15, the first church council convened over a false teaching of that day:

"Unless you are circumcised, according to the custom taught by Moses, you cannot be saved," verse 1.

When the Lord's apostles wrote their decision about circumcision for the Gentile Christians to read (Acts 15:23-29), their silence about the observance of the Jewish Sabbath is significant, especially when we consider that breaking the Saturday Sabbath command in the Old Testament carried with it very serious consequences, including the death sentence for offenders (Exo. 31:14-17 cf. Num. 15:32-36):

5. The Real Purpose of the entire Ten Commandments
"So the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ that we might be justified by faith." (Gal. 3:24)

"Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin." (Rom. 3:20)

6. Did the Lord Jesus Command a Person to Sin on the Sabbath
"Sir," the invalid replied, "I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me." Then Jesus said to him, "Get up! Pick up your mat and walk." At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath, and so the Jews said to the man who had been healed, "It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat." But he replied, "The man who made me well said to me, 'Pick up your mat and walk' " (John 5:7-11).

The Lord Jesus commanded that invalid, on a Sabbath, to pick up his mat and walk with it to be healed. Hence, this would constitute "work," according to the Old Testament Sabbath command. Since the Lord of the Sabbath could NEVER command a person to sin, we, thereby know that Christians today are NOT under this same Sabbath command as given to Israel in Ex. 20:8-11, which reads:

"Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy (Ex. 20:8-11).

Again, what the Lord Jesus told the man to do was forbidden to be done on a Sabbath, as the Jews correctly noted:

"The day on which this took place was a Sabbath, and so the Jews said to the man who had been healed, "It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat" (John 5:9,10).

Here's the exact Scripture where such was forbidden:

"This is what the LORD says: Be careful not to carry a load on the Sabbath day or bring it through the gates of Jerusalem. Do not bring a load out of your houses or do any work on the Sabbath, but keep the Sabbath day holy, as I commanded your forefathers. Yet they did not listen or pay attention; they were stiff-necked and would not listen or respond to discipline. But if you are careful to obey me, declares the LORD, and bring no load through the gates of this city on the Sabbath, but keep the Sabbath day holy by not doing any work on it" (Jer. 17:21-24).

But if you do not obey me to keep the Sabbath day holy by not carrying any load as you come through the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, then I will kindle an unquenchable fire in the gates of Jerusalem that will consume her fortresses.'" (Jer 17:27)

The Jews were right that the law, as given to Israel, to keep holy the Sabbath day forbid such things from being done. Hence, the OT Sabbath command can no longer be valid for Christians. So when did this change? The answer is found in Lk. 16:16:

"The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John. Since that time, the good news of the kingdom of God is being preached, and everyone is forcing his way into it."

This is also the reason why we don't see this part of the 10 commandments reinstated in the New Testament. This point cannot be answered by the SDA people. Messianic Jews Are Also WRONG About The Sabbath

Sabbatarians Are Not Keeping The Saturday Sabbath
Saturday Sabbatarians claim to keep the Sabbath command as was given to Israel, but in reality are only keeping a modified Sabbath regulation, which is not keeping it at all! Below are three reasons why this is so:

A) In the OT, when this command was given to Israel and enforced, people were to be put to death for desecrating the Sabbath (Ex. 31:14,15):

"Observe the Sabbath, because it is holy to you. Anyone who desecrates it must be put to death; whoever does any work on that day must be cut off from his people. For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day must be put to death. The Israelites are to observe the Sabbath, celebrating it for the generations to come as a lasting covenant. It will be a sign between me and the Israelites forever, for in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day he abstained from work and rested" (Exo. 31:14-17).

A man was put to death for violating this command (Num. 15:32-36). So the same ones (Israel) that kept the Sabbath put to death Sabbath violators. Sabbatarians are NOT doing this!

B) The Sabbath keepers were NOT allowed to light a fire on the Sabbath day:

"Ye shall kindle no fire throughout your habitations upon the sabbath day" (Ex. 35:3, KJV).

If your heat in the winter is automatic through your furnace, you are violating this command. If you light your stove on the Sabbath you violate this command. If have an automatic hot water heater you are violating this command. Finally, if you start your car on the Sabbath, you have also violated this command given to Israel. Note: When you start your car, you start a fire that did not exist moments before.

C) On "EVERY Sabbath" there is to be a burnt offering:

"On the Sabbath day, make an offering of two lambs a year old without defect, together with its drink offering and a grain offering of two-tenths of an ephah of fine flour mixed with oil. This is the burnt offering for every Sabbath, in addition to the regular burnt offering and its drink offering" (Num. 28:9,10).

This OT command for Sabbath keepers is clearly forbidden under the New Covenant in light of the book of Hebrews. The early Christians didn't do this and, therefore, did not keep the Saturday Sabbath command like Israel (Ex. 20:8-11 cf. Num. 28:9,10).

Saturday Sabbath Breakers NOT in the Lake of Fire
There is no Scripture in the New Testament which states that Saturday Sabbath breakers will be thrown into the lake of fire. On the other hand, the New Testament does state that idolaters, murderers, thieves, the covetous, the sexually immoral, liars, etc. will be excluded from the kingdom of God and thrown into the lake of burning sulfur (1 Cor. 6:9,10; Eph. 5:5-7; Gal. 5:19-21; Rev. 21:8). Furthermore, there are others, like the drunkards, etc. who are not mentioned in the Ten Commandments, that will likewise experience the same eternal destiny, that is, unless they repent (1 Cor. 6:9,10; Gal. 5:19-21).

For a Saturday Sabbatarian to say one MUST keep the Saturday Sabbath regulation for salvation is to place themselves under the anathema found in Gal. 1:8,9. A person can be a true Christian and have Sunday as the special day unto the Lord.

The True Plan Of Salvation
Furthermore, the true plan of salvation is concisely stated in the Bible as repentance towards God and faith in Christ Jesus (Acts 20:21). We are to produce fruit in keeping with repentance (Matt. 3:8) and prove our repentance by our deeds (Acts 26:20). To "repent" means to turn from your evil ways (Matt. 12:41 cf. Jonah 3:10). Every tree that does not bring forth good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire (Matt. 3:10; 7:19). The Lord Jesus also taught the road to life is "hard" and only a "few" will find it (Matt. 7:13,14, NKJV). The Lord declared there that there are ONLY 2 gates, 2 roads, 2 groups of people and 2 eternal destinies. So don't follow the crowd, since they are on their way to eternal fire, even though they might not know it.

Moreover, many get saved, but afterwards fall away (Lk. 8:13; Jn. 6:66; 1 Tim. 1:19; etc.). In other words, after initial salvation we must endure to the "end" to enter the kingdom of God and escape the lake of fire (Matt. 10:22; Heb. 3:14; Rev. 2:10,11). Eternal life comes to the repentant the moment such believe on Jesus for salvation (Jn. 3:16; 6:47; 1 Jn. 5:12,13), but there is another important aspect of eternal life that many are totally unaware of in our day because of a different false teaching which is commonly called "once saved, always saved." According to true, Biblical, grace teaching, eternal life is also a HOPE (Titus 3:7), yet to be REAPED (Gal. 6:8,9) in the AGE TO COME (Mk. 10:30) for only the ones who PERSIST IN DOING GOOD (Rom. 2:7) and DO NOT GROW WEARY AND GIVE UP (Gal. 6:9).

Also, remember this: If a saved person sows to please his sinful nature he'll die spiritually (Rom. 8:13; Gal. 6:8,9). The prodigal son is a clear example of this (Lk. 15:24,32). The end result of sin is spiritual death. DO NOT BE DECEIVED by the "once saved, always saved" teachers (James 1:14-16). We must continue to believe (TRUST) on Jesus for our soul's salvation to enter the Kingdom of God. Jesus described his "sheep" as his "followers" (John 10:27). James stated that faith without works is "dead" (James 2:17). In conclusion, Jesus successfully destroyed the devil's work (1 John 3:8). He is the resurrected "Lord of glory" (1 Cor. 2:8), before whom every knee will bow and every tongue confess that he is Lord (Phil. 2:9-11). Jesus has the ONLY name in which salvation is found (Acts 4:12), is the ONLY mediator between God and man (1 Tim. 2:5) and is the judge of the living and the dead (Acts 10:42; 2 Tim. 4:1; 1 Pet. 4:5). We are advised in Scripture to go directly to Him for forgiveness and to TRUST in Him alone for our soul's salvation.

Ellen G. White and Her Sabbath
No offense intended, but if you are a Seventh Day Adventist, did you know that Ellen G. White was a false prophetess, plagiarist and false teacher? Her strange teaching that Christ entered the heavenly sanctuary in 1844 to perform investigative judgment is a clear denial of the finality of the atonement on the cross. See Jn. 19:30. Also, for her to teach Satan is the sin bearer is a clear contradiction of Scripture (Isa. 53:6; 2 Cor. 5:21; 1 Pet. 2:24). Both of these false teachings disseminated by false prophetess Ellen G. White can be found in her book, The Great Controversy page 422 published by Pacific Press, Mountain View, CA, 1950.

Here is a brief explanation of my understanding.

- The Sabbath is regulated by the Law
- The Law, as Israel's part of the Covenant of Sinai, was only ever given to Israel
- The Law, as part of the New Covenant, is only given to Israel (Jer.31:31-33, Heb.8:8-10).
- When God made the Church, or "New Man", He abolished the Law for the Jewish convert. He called it an enemy and a "partition", as it demanded the separation of Jew and Gentile (Eph.2:15). If in effect, the Law would trash the "Oneness of the Church".

Thus,
- the Christian has nothing to do with the Law as he was never included in it
- the Jew who remains a Jew is FULLY bound by the Law, now, and when the Law is introduced into their hearts and minds

The New Covenant, like all Covenants between a holy God and a fallen man, had to be RATIFIED by blood (Heb.9:18-23). At the so-called "last supper" the cup was symbolic of Jesus' blood in regard to the FUTURE New Covenant. The blood of Jesus also has other functions. For instance, it "speaks better things than that of Abel. The matter of the cursed earth has nothing to do with our salvation. It is Christ's blood shed that the cry of Abel's blood be stilled and the curse be lifted. The New Covenant is only made with Israel and Judah when they are again one Nation. This is still future. The Covenant is RATIFIED in Christ's blood, and then IMPLEMENTED when Israel is united again in their Land.

The Sabbath of Hebrews 3 and 4 refers backward to the length of the Sabbath - 1,000 years, and forward to the Millennium - 1,000 years. God is wroth that Adam failed to accomplish the Sabbath (he died at 930 years), and wroth that Israel could not occupy the Land for the 1,000 years. But the future Sabbath, has as its Principle "the Second Adam" - Jesus. He accomplishes the Sabbath that God may rest. The Sabbath is constituted as follows: (i) God has finished His Work. (ii) God has His Man in position on earth to subdue and rule. (iii) God's Man does not die. Both Adam and Israel could not fulfill these terms. Jesus will.

No laws were reinstated. That's a misunderstanding of scripture.

We were just talking about this in Sunday school today, and there is a huge misconception among christians today, that when Jesus came He did away with the law, and reinstated the rules He wanted.

This is false. Entirely.

Jesus didn't do away with anything other then the old covenant. The old covenant, overly simplified basically stated follow the law, but recognized that no one could so it allowed a method of atonement, being animal sacrifice.

The new covenant, Jesus was the ultimate sacrifice, the sacrifice to end all sacrifices. In it, He ended all the animal sacrifices, and making a new covenant.

The law, is still in place, except where Jesus specifically changed it. Such as the dietary restrictions in Acts.

The apostle Paul stated on multiple occasions in the book of Romans (chapter 7 coming to mind) that the law still exists, and the reason for it.

The law still exists to define what IS, and what is NOT sin.

And to show that none of us, can live up to it's standards, and why we need a savior.

So to say that Jesus reinstates certain laws is backwards as it is based on the fallacy that Jesus did away with the law.

A more accurate statement would be Jesus vetoed certain laws.

Did ya'll talk about the Law of Christ, aka the law of liberty, aka the doctrine of Chris, aka doctrine of the apostles?

There are some things that were carried over from the old covenant, but there are also new things that raise the bar such as when Jesus said if a man lusts after a woman in his heart, he's already commited adultery (Matthew 5:28).  There's no record in the old testament law that said lusting after a woman was a sin... but it is in the new covenant!

1 Corinthians 9:21
To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law.

Galatians 6:2
Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

James 2:12
So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.

James 1:25
But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

2 John 1:9
Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.

Hebrews 6:1
Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,

Acts 2:42
And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

I like how you pick and choose what I said and twist it to your own agenda, ignoring anything you don't have an answer to.

Seems to indicate to me that there is no further point to this conversation, so I won't waste either of ours time. Have a good evening.

Good deal, suit yourself.

I'm simply posting reference to the Law of Christ which is a new testament thing that is different from the law of the old testament.

If you'd like to believe I'm attacking you in some way, that's your call saul!

I didn't say you attacked me at all, I simply stated that you pretty much ignored my entire post, except for one little part of it, which you took out of context.

Doesn't lead to a very fruitful conversation ;)

We must consider that "reinstatement" implies prior suspension, of which none of the Ten Commandments were:

"The works of His hands are verity and judgment. All His commandments (only the big Ten are Biblically associated with "His hands") are sure; they stand fast forever and ever, and are done in truth and uprightness". - Psalms 111:7-8 KJV

Never gonna be right to break any of the Ten, including the Sabbath (see below).

In Hebrews 4:1-11 KJV, the word "rest" appears over and over in the context of "spiritual rest" and in every case the Greek word is "katapuasis" or it's root "katapuau" *** EXCEPT *** in verse 9 where the Greek is "Sabbatismos" - which refers to the weekly Sabbath.

That's why Lamsa's Peshitta accurately renders it:

[9] It is therefore the duty of the people of God to keep the Sabbath".

[10] For he that hath entered into His rest, he hath ceased from his own works, as God did from His."

In other words, it's our duty to keep the Sabbath because if we've entered into the spiritual rest of Jesus, we are to demonstrate that inward rest by resting outwardly from our work "as God did from His".

It doesn't mean "rest from works of sin" as the false pulpit prophets claim, because God never rested from such.

It doesn't mean "rest from the law" because by faith we establish the law, and by keeping the law we show our faith.

When it comes to Hebrews 4:9 KJV, remember the English ain't what's inspired - the Greek is inspired. What say you, my friend?

Hi, Stan, the most famous detective to never be was Sherlock Holmes, who famously said, "It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data".

Our knowledge of Jesus' mission must be understood in the light of the O.T. sanctuary service, of which almost the entire Christian church is woefully ignorant, and therefore ill equipped to comment on eschatological issues which are STEEPED in sanctuary language and symbolism in the prophetic passages.

As you know, when the guilty Israelite "leaned on the lamb" and "confessed" his sin and "shed it's blood", the penalty of sin for which he deserved death was passed onto innocent victim, and that man was as clean as the wind driven show - THE WORK OF FORGIVENESS WAS FINISHED.

However, there yet remained much to do by the high priest by way of daily prayer, daily intercession, all daily duties, as well as the yearly "cleansing of the sanctuary" which included an Investigative Judgment" at the close of the ritual year. .

Is not Jesus our "High Priest, a Minister of the Sanctuary of the True Tabernacle, which the Lord pitched and not man"? Absolutely.

So, it's wildly inaccurate to claim Christ's entrance into the Most Holy Place for the final phase of His heavenly ministry - the Investigative Judgment - is "a denial of the finality of the Cross", ESPECIALLY WHEN BOTH THE JEWISH ENCYCLOPEDIA, VOL. II AND THE TALMUD BOTH PLAINLY STATE THAT THE DAY OF ATONEMENT IS THE DAY OF JUDGMENT.

Observing the Sabbath

Paul plainly declared that no Christian should be “judged” (i.e., condemned) for failing to observe the Sabbath (Col. 2:16) — a statement that never would have been made if the law of Moses had been binding when the apostle penned his letter.
------------------------------------------------
Notice "Sabbath days", plural. These Sabbaths, new moons and holydays were part of the ceremonial system. Notice that Sunday was also a Holyday:
Lev 23:7

On the first day you shall have a holy convocation; you shall do no customary work on it.
------------------------------------------------
The evidence of the New Testament is decisive. The early Christians met on “the first day of the week” (Acts 20:7), indeed “every first day of the week” (1 Cor. 16:2). [Note: The Greek of 1 Corinthians 16:2 is kata mian sabbatou, literally, “on the first day of every week” — see: J.H. Thayer, Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament, Edinburgh: T.&T. Clark, 1958, p. 328).

There is no biblical case that can be made in defense of “Christian Sabbath-keeping” for today. Efforts to this end are exercises in theological futility. That proposition has the support of neither Scripture mandate nor apostolic precedent.  There is no scriptural call to action in the New Testament for Christians to “Christian Sabbath-keeping”… Jesus Christ IS our Sabbath and those walking in the Spirit being born again have entered into Christ being translated from the world into the Kingdom of God’s Dear Son (Colossians 1:13).

Sundays - Why we Observe

Mankind's Day of Rest, the Sabbath Day

Question - Since the Old Testament commanded people to observe the Sabbath on the seventh day of the week, why have most Christian churches switched their day of worship to Sunday, the first day of the week?

Not all churches answer this question the same way. Some groups, most notably the Seventh-day Adventists, still worship on the seventh day. They argue that the sabbath was one of the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20), and is therefore part of God's permanent will for His people.

They often claim that the shift to Sunday was part of a great apostasy that allowed pagan ideas to infiltrate the church during the early centuries (see Ellen G. White, The Great Controversy, pp. 58-59).

Other Christian groups say that Sunday is the Christian version of the sabbath. They suggest that the main point of God's command to observe the sabbath was not the seventh day, but the idea of one day out of the seven. Jesus claimed that he was “lord even of the sabbath” (Mark 2:28), and therefore had the authority to change it to a different day.

This position argues that Jesus changed the day to Sunday as a way of extending its blessing from the Jews to the whole world. Still others Christians would say that we no longer observe the Jewish sabbath, but worship instead on Sunday, a distinctively Christian holy day. They argue that the early church very soon began meeting on Sunday in honor of the resurrection of Jesus, which took place on the first day of the week.

At the very beginning, the church in Jerusalem met every day in the temple and in private homes (Acts 2:46). Since the first believers were all Jewish, it seems safe to assume that they continued to participate in Jewish synagogue and temple worship for some time.

However, the New Testament makes it clear that the observance of a particular day was not imposed as a binding obligation.

Romans 14:5-6 makes it clear that there was some freedom in the matter of special days. Colossians 2:16-17 commanded the church not to allow anyone to act as their judge in regard to sabbath days. And Galatians 4:9-10 warns against going back under the Law by insisting on the legal requirement of special days.

The records that remain in the New Testament show that the first day of the week soon became a day of worship. When Paul wanted to collect an offering from the church at Corinth, he asked them to gather the money on the “first day of the week” (1 Cor. 16:2). And when he wanted to meet with the believers at Troas, the gathering took place "on the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread" (Acts 20:7).

In Revelation 1:10, the apostle John described himself as being "in the Spirit on the Lord's Day." Most writers have thought he was referring to Sunday, so that our use of "the Lord's Day" as a term for Sunday comes from this verse. There is no Scripture passage that specifically teaches that the sabbath has been transferred from one day to another.

It seems most likely that the shift from Saturday to Sunday was gradual, and took place along with the change from a mostly Jewish church to a mostly Gentile one. The early church fathers generally viewed sabbath as a Jewish observance, and the Lord's Day as the proper Christian observance. For example, Ignatius wrote in the early 100's A.D., describing Christians with a Jewish background as those who “have come to the possession of a new hope, no longer observing the Sabbath, but living in observance of the Lord's Day, on which also our life has sprung up again by Him and by His death” (Magnesians 9 )

[Editor's note: Magnesians is a letter written to the church at Magnesia by Ignatius, a church father, also called Theophorus.]
(NOT a Scriptural Reference)

A person's decision concerning sabbath observance probably hinges on the question of how we view the entire Old Testament. If all of it is still binding on us, then so is the sabbath. If there are parts that are no longer binding because they were directed specifically to the Jewish nation, or because they were for ritual purposes, then the sabbath is open for discussion. No matter what position a person takes, it is important to recognize that God has a claim to all of my time. When I give Him one day of the week, it reminds me that He owns all seven!

“Would you explain Matthew 28:1, ‘In the end of the Sabbath’ (KJV), or ‘Late on the Sabbath’ (ASV)? This seems to say that the women came to the tomb and found it empty on the evening of the Sabbath, which would indicate that Jesus was raised on Saturday, not Sunday.”

No, this does not mean that Jesus was raised from the grave on Saturday. The problem is one of translation from the original Greek language into English.

First, the other Gospel accounts clearly show that this visit occurred upon the first day of the week (Mark 16:1-2; Luke 24:1; John 20:1).

Second, the rendition of Matthew 28:1 should be as follows: “After the sabbath day, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week . . .” The Sabbath ended at 6:00 the previous evening, and the dawn of Sunday morning was approaching. The Greek of the passage is opse sabbaton, meaning “after the Sabbath” (Arndt and Gingrich 1967, 606). The Revised Standard Version thus correctly translates, “Now after the sabbath . . .” The New American Standard Bible renders the verse in the same way.

Third, it is the universal testimony of both Scripture and church history that the early Christians regarded Sunday as Christ’s resurrection day. The disciples met together on resurrection Sunday (John 20:19), then on Sunday a week later (20:26). The church was established on Pentecost, which always came on Sunday (Leviticus 23:15-16; Acts 2:1). The early Christians, under the leadership of inspired men, worshipped on Sunday (Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 16:2). That day was later designated as “the Lord’s day” (Revelation 1:10). To all of this evidence agree the testimonies of the writers in the post-apostolic age, i.e., from A.D. 100 to A.D. 325. Sunday was the resurrection day.

The Lord came forth from the dead not on Saturday, but on Sunday morning.

Galatians 2:11-20 (NAS)
But when Cephas (Peter) came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned.

For prior to the coming of certain men from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he began to withdraw and hold himself aloof, fearing the party of the circumcision.

And the rest of the Jews joined him in hypocrisy, with the result that even Barnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy.

But when I saw that they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas in the presence of all, "If you, being a Jew, live like the Gentiles and not like the Jews, how is it that you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?

"We are Jews by nature, and not sinners from among the Gentiles;

nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we may be justified by faith in Christ, and not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law shall no flesh be justified.

"But if, while seeking to be justified in Christ, we ourselves have also been found sinners, is Christ then a minister of sin? May it never be!

"For if I rebuild what I have once destroyed, I prove myself to be a transgressor.

"For through the Law I died to the Law, that I might live to God.

"I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and delivered Himself up for me.

Romans 2:25-29
For circumcision verily profiteth, if thou keep the law: but if thou be a breaker of the law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision.

Therefore if the uncircumcision keep the righteousness of the law, shall not his uncircumcision be counted for circumcision?

And shall not uncircumcision which is by nature, if it fulfil the law, judge thee, who by the letter and circumcision dost transgress the law?

For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh:

But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.

1 Corinthians 7:19
Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but the keeping of the commandments of God.

Let every man abide in the same calling wherein he was called.

Art thou called being a servant? care not for it: but if thou mayest be made free, use it rather.

For he that is called in the Lord, being a servant, is the Lord's freeman: likewise also he that is called, being free, is Christ's servant.

Ye are bought with a price; be not ye the servants of men.

Brethren, let every man, wherein he is called, therein abide with God.

There is no Saturday Sabbath Day today. Colossians 2:14-16 tells us that the ceremonials laws were nailed to the cross, including the Sabbath Day. Jesus became the fulfillment of what the Sabbath represented in the Old Testament. The Sabbath Day was a ceremonial Law, only for the Jews in the Old Testament. It pictured resting in Jesus Christ for salvation.

This is plainly taught in Hebrews 4:1-5..."Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.

For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works. And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest."
